ABS fault. Pump?
Hi guys.
I have an S50 Roadster and I've had the ABS light on for 6 months or so now but left it as I only drive it once a month. It's been diagnosed as an ABS pump and recently after slightly longer journeys while pulling up to a junction the brakes almost jam on and the brake pedal vibrates. Does this sound like the pump?

gjk8a had a replacement pump / module fitted and i think something similar happened to him until it was recoded to the car, however as I say this was when he had a replacement fitted.
AlanW and myself had the module fail (and had them fixed) which results in the light being on and the ABS not working when you slam on, but it didn't result in the brakes locking dangerously under normal driving conditions...
Re: ABS fault. Pump?
I've also changed only the module. Again, didn't get your symptoms. Just had the light come on. I believe the ABS is disabled when the module fails.
It's not impossible it's still the module. But the pump itself sounds a possibility for you. The diagnostics may be showing a '71 ABS pump error'. If your mechanic is seeing that he may be assuming it's the pump just because the word is in the description. But that's the code I got when my module went.

Great. The ABS hadn't worked for a while but I drive it so rarely it wasn't an issue. With the recent symptoms I think I had best get it replaced

Re: ABS fault. Pump?
Very similar problems to mine, hit the brake pedal and the brakes locked up, pedal vibrated and a strange buzzing noise happened like the ABS was trying to work. Diagnosed as a faulty pump so fitted a second hand unit with the same part number which partially fixed it. Only thing was the traction control light wouldn't flash when the wheels spun so we coded it with INPA and all is perfect now. Fitting a second hand unit will be cheaper but they probably won't come with a warranty and may give up at any time as it seems to be quite a common problem. At least a refurbished should come with some warranty but you will be left with not been able to use the car whilst its away.

Re: ABS fault. Pump?
This is an expensive part brand new, supply and fit a dealer would relieve you of maybe £1,500.
I got lucky with a second-hand one off Ebay for £45. But you do need to match the part number carefully.
I only used the control module so the pump itself is sitting around and unlikely to be used. If interested I can check the part number and post it to you for £25. But personally I'd budget £50 and find a complete unit off Ebay preferably from the same model Z3 so you don't need to re-code it.

Re-coding my module in INPA is the one job that's eluded me so far. I have multiple sets of instructions none of which I can get to work. Do you have a link to the instructions you used or would you be able to PM me a brief how to please?g8jka wrote:Very similar problems to mine, hit the brake pedal and the brakes locked up, pedal vibrated and a strange buzzing noise happened like the ABS was trying to work. I'm not 100% sure as gookah did it for me, I'll get him to post details if he can remembermrscalex wrote:Re-coding my module in INPA is the one job that's eluded me so far. Re: ABS fault. Pump?
Thanks for all the help. Does sound very much like the pump. It's going in tomorrow and with there not being a huge rush I may suggest sending the unit away to be repaired

Re: ABS fault. Pump?
I definitely need a new ABS unit. The old one can't be repaired. It's model number 10.0202-0211.4.
Only one I can find is 3 weeks delivery and £367 off eBay.....

Does anyone have any ideas?

Re: ABS fault. Pump?
I had the same problem and you just need to get the new module coded to the car. The same module / pump combination can be used across a number of different models; e.g. my unit with the same numbers came from an E46. The ABS light goes out as the system self tests each time the engine is started but the ASC needs to know what car it is in as the code in the module will be different from the code in the main ECU. Each BMW has a unique code that includes the model, options fitted, etc. so the code just needs copying from the car's ECU to the module. I used a local BMW specialist to recode it rather than risk doing it with INPA, it cost £40.wifevanda wrote:i to had the abs light on plus the triangle warning light.got a second hand pump and module, all numbers matching.changed just the module .abs light out but triangle still on .help what do i do now.
