Z3-Z4

Post by si-forks »

Hi all i'am looking to buy a Z4 in the next few weeks and would like some advice on what to go for
The car will only be used at weekends and European trips so fuel maybe a factor and i do like my toys ! My budget is £7000 if i sell my Z3 maybe £8500 I've been looking at boxsters but got sick of looking at over priced junk , my step brother works for Audi so he's pushing TTs at me ! But i'am a beemer man at heart ( my daily drive is a 525d )
been looking at a 2L face lift car but at 150bhp is it a bit under powered ? Anyway all advice welcome also what options are worth having sat nav heated seats ect

really like this car http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/ ... 2244719429

Overall we've been quite pleased with our facelift 2.0sp Z4. We went for the 2.0sp as a) it was going to be Mrs ZC's daily car for 4 years and b) in Oct 07 dealers had a glut of these - with all of them being 6 months old with around 1 to 2k on the clock and discounted by 40% from the full list price.

Under powered? Really depends on what you're used to / want? At 150bhp it's basically the same as the 2.0 Z3 BUT being a 4-pot (non-turbo) it lacks the torque of the 6-pot engines - more noticeable at low revs. I've found that I've now got a different driving style for the Z4 - keeping the revs up to compensate for the lack of low end torque. The engine is behind the front axle and (once I'd got used to it) I found the steering to be light and more direct than the Z3. In 6th at the 3,000rpm the speedometer sits on 80 and it's quite a nice relaxed cruiser - we regularly do 550 mile return trips to Scotland and can get close to 40mpg. When we've been travelling very late at night / early in the morning it's quite easy to gradually drift up to 100 without noticing :D

The 2.0sp is slightly lower than the SE and the ride is quite a bit stiffer. Ours came with heated seats (a must have!), dual climate control, auto dimmimg mirrors and auto lights. I don't think that you can really compare the Z3 and Z4 as they are 2 different cars each with it's own appeal. For a long weekend away the Z4 usually gets the vote (bigger boot) but for a day trip over to Cumbria taking in Hardknott Pass then it would be the Z3.

Best thing would be to go and have a try in one or two before deciding.

Ive had 2 Z4s and a TT and a Boxster and the reason iv had two Z4s is i found i liked these the best. Id go for the 3.0 se and you will find fuel consumtion is better than the 2.0 or 2.2 ect because of the 6 speed box..it also makes it more relaxing on long journeys.... the options you should be looking for are...prof sat nav, sports seats..cruise..DSP HI FI..CUP HOLDERS (im not joking)... The things to check...roof is working (tend to fail because of blocked drain holes) and if fitted with xenons that the level motors are working..suspension springs also snap/crack.
Good luck..they are a great car...............

I cannot comment on the comparison between the Z3 and Z4 as I haven't driven a Z4, however the lack of a factory sat-nav wouldn't concern me. One of my neighbours used to own an M3 and BMW wanted well in excess of £300 for the update discs. Whilst a TomTom mounted on the screen may not look as fancy, they can be bought for far less than £300 and you can subscribe to map updates for much less. There are various other features that I have on my sat-nav that certainly wouldn't exist on an OE one in a six or seven year old car.

I dare say that others will have different opinions, but the lack of a sat-nav wouldn't be a deal breaker for me on an otherwise good car.

Thanks for all your replies i sold my Harley to buy another sports car 6 months ago i was adamant it was going to a porsche but soon got feed up looking at over priced cars and it soon became clear my money was going to get me into a porsche that wasn't a dog
The longer i'am leaving it the more i'am not sure what i want but with the price of Z4s dropping there are some nice looking cars about for my money

The one in your link is very similar to our Z4 except that we've got the Sports Active seats rather than the all leather seats. We have cup holders as well - not sure if these were standard on the Sports trim? Did try a couple of SE models (2.0 and 3.0) but didn't like them as much as the Sports even though the Sports can be quite a "crashy" ride on rough surfaces.

The main advantages of the facelift are: all models (2.0, 2.5 and 3.0) got the 6-speed box, the roof motor is now protected against water ingress from blocked roof drains (this was an issue with the pre-facelift Z4s) and all models got better sound proofing.

This one hasn't got the wind deflector - there are 3 pieces: 2 small ones clip inside the roll bars and 1 longer one that fits into brackets on the inside edges of the roll bars. The cabin in the Z4 is a bit more open than the Z3 and the wind deflector makes a big difference. Looks like it could have been someone's a daily driver (67k in 6 years) I'd be tempted to check with the dealer as the description on the website could be better:

2006 (56) BMW Z4 ROADSTER 2.5si Sport 2dr, 2 Door Convertible, Red (no it's Black), previous owners 1 (is it 1 or 2?), 66,954 miles, ABS, Alarm, Audio remote control, Body coloured bumpers, Climate Control, Driver airbag, Electric door mirrors, Front electric windows, Front fog lights, Front head restraints, Heated door mirrors, Immobiliser, Isofix child seat anchor points, PAS, Passenger airbag, Radio/CD, Rear electric windows, Remote central locking, Service indicator, Side airbags, Sports seats, Steering wheel rake adjustment, Steering wheel reach adjustment, Traction control, Trip computer, FULL BLACK LEATHER SPORTS SEATS. TWO OWNERS FROM NEW (is it 1 or 2?) , FULL BLACK LEATHER SPORTS SEATS WITH HEATED SEATS, REAR PARK SENSORS, M SPORT STEERING WHEEL, 18" M SPORT ALLOY WHEELS, XENON HEAD LIGHTS No mention of service history?
