Z4 alternator not charging?

My mums z4 has a bit of a problem with the electrical system. I believe the alternator is at fault but just thought I'd check anyone else's experiences with them. The cars had a new battery not long ago but when the voltage was checked it was about 11.7v. The car struggled to start and when running the voltage was down to about 9v. Are the alternators a common problem on the e85 z4?

Hi Daz. My 03 3ltr hasnt had any probs ab ive not heard of any.

Just to finish this one I took the alternator off for testing needed new bearings and regulator now it's charging fine! When the car was running before it was bringing up all sorts of lights on the dash and the steering also went heavy!
