Z3 3.0i to Z4 3.0si

Post by GROMMIT »

Been a member here for many years now but haven't posted for a few.

My Z3 was totalled just before xmas, so I've now upgraded to a Z4. Managed to find one with one owner, 40000 miles, black and full history for under 10k. She's a beast.

I'm picking up a hardtop next Tuesday. I'm painting the wheels black this week.

Pics to come!

Hi
Have just done a similar thing although still have the z3 (2.8 z3 to 3.0 se z4).
Although the z4 has a lot more creature comforts, is faster and has a proper glass rear window making the hood operation much easier, I am still not convinced I prefer it to the z3 when it comes down to driver satisfaction.
Steering is not as precise and something seems to be missing?
Not sure of your thoughts on the vehicle change you have done but I am reluctant to sell the z3 and am still considering letting the z4 go although will be using the 4 for our forthcoming tour of Europe which is the reason I bought her as boot is so much bigger.
Decisions, decisions !!

I have both (and more) and for different reasons love both.

The Z3 is my daily runaround and it is perfect for shorter rides and times when I need no boot (even shopping).

A decent run enables me to get the Z4M coupe out of the garage.

The Z4 is actually in Mallorca, but it is a pleasure to drive around there. It's easier to drive than the Z3 or Z4MC whilst I focus on avoiding cyclists and take in some views. It's the smoothest of the three cars to drive and the least drivers' car, but still a dream and more than adequate power. My easiest car to drive now is the 135i coupe, which has got everything 3 litres of twin turbo, and auto or manual box and it is as fast as the Z4MC as makes no difference - just thirsty.

Still probably stick mostly with the Z3 though and having the 3 litres makes for a great all rounder (except boot space or when needing to take my carbon framed road bike for triathlons....again the 135i rear seats down sorts that problem.

The joys of BMW.

Further to my earlier post, could not live with the Z4 so it went today and replaced by a 2000 Z3 3.0 which as previously mentioned does not have all the extras but is so much more fun to drive.
A few bits and pieces to sort out but that is part of the fun.
Agree with others that for boot space or long distance motoring the Z4 might have the edge but as a second car for short trips, Z3 everytime!!!
If any Z4 owner is looking for an unused hood cover by ZeeZee tops ? for winter protection, please contact me for details

If I was personally going to buy a z4 in the 3.0 engine id personally go for the E89 version simply because:

1. It has better comforts and technology
2. Metal folding roof is absolutely amazing switch from convertible to coupe
3. better fuel consumption and tax cheaper in the 3 litre version
4. Better looking the z3 and E85

just my opinion :)
