Common indeed,

The northeast is swarming with them!

Living in such relatively affluent times I see lots of Astons, Ferraris, Porsche, Lamborghini's and Rolls around but never seen a Z8, which would be cheaper than all of these. Strange. Clearly being LHD put lots of people off.

The Alpina also has the distinction (?) of being quite possibly the only model they have produced which has a smaller engine and less power than the model it was based on...

It was indeed.
They deduced that the American market would want a cruiser instead of a bruiser, and went for a 4.8 (which interestingly is pretty much identical to BMW's current X5 and 550 models engine) auto as opposed to the M5's 5.0.

Included amongst the Alpinas is number 37 which was once owned by Ronan Keating.

I thought he had converted it to RHD, but according to the Alpina Register it's still a left hooker (just like my Smart car :D ).

The 4.8 in the X5 is actually of Alpina design.
BMW bought the rights to the engine from Alpina.

Alpina also do design and development for other manufacturers ...
For example ... The first tiptronic gearshift used by Porsche was developed by Alpina.
