Type 42 bolted wheels - Black or Silver?

Post by Dickyt »

I am looking to get my BMW 17" type 42 split rim / bolted wheels refurbished at some point this year. They are stock finish with Silver paint centre's and polished rims. I was going to go for the same finish, but I wonder if anyone has tried any other finish combinations on these wheels & has any photos to show?
I am sure that at Silverstone, I spotted another Z3 (Silver??) with the same wheels, but the centre spoke sections were painted gloss black with the rims still in polished finish - they looked pretty dam good. I can't remember if they were bolted or not - is the owner on here & do you have any photos? I am just wondering what they would look like on my Sapphire Black Z3 3.0i Sport, and how it would work with the silver bolts?
Alternatively, with re-furb cost's probably being up to £100 a wheel - would it be worth looking at any other after market wheel options (sticking with 17") ?
I would appreciate any comments on alternative colours/finish on this wheel or other options, especially on Black car & any photos to show the effect.

Cheers

I quite like both of those, but always thought these finishes look best on a Grey car - not too sure how they would look on my Black beastie? Shame there is not some magic photoshop type of thingy that you can place any type of wheel & finish onto to your car for a quick look-see.

Anyone got any photos of their black Z3 with black wheels?

It was my car I think. I had the centres done in a dark blue/grey metal finish and the outside rims done in silver. The previous owner has taken the laquer off the outside rims and they were forever getting pitted and were a pig to keep clean, so i had the wheels refurbed.
i went for a 2 colour finish as i wanted something different rather than just the standard silver. As the car spends its life outside there was no way I was going down the polished rim route. I'll get some photo's up when I get home tonight

Hello Zee 3,

Thanks for that, sorry but I thought the wheels were black - I must me colour blind, but I didn't look that closely. Would love to see photos if you have any?

I know what you mean about the polished rims, mine is a weekend toy & a bit of a garage queen so it doesn't get the daily abuse - but I do know what you mean about keeping them clean, I am forever going at them with the old autosol. I hadn't thought about having the rims painted as well - good idea which I will keep in mind for mine. Did you have the insides of the wheels painted as well? Mine are in a pretty sorry state on the inside, do you know if this is done as standard with a refurb, or an additional cost?

If you don't mind me asking, where did you get them done & what did it cost for the refurb?

I had them done at The Wheel Clinic in Chesterfield. They did the works on them. Split the rims, did outside the wheel and inside and I also hd the calipers done.

The first photo is when I first had them done, I was waiting for new wheel nuts to arrive and had not put the hub caps back on. Cost was about £375 which was brilliant.
They have been done over a year now and the finish is still first class

Thanks for the photos - they look great and work very well on your car. I think I will go with the Black centres on mine, just not sure about the rims - whether to stick with polished or go for silver painted as per yours. I've been recommended a wheel specialist in the west mids, so I will discuss it with them.
£375 sounds a bargain for all 4 wheels & looks like they have done a fantastic job with them. I will get mine done sometime over the winter, I've just had all new front callipers / discs / pads fitted, and I am looking forward to actually driving the car for a change now that the sun looks like it's coming out to play. It's spent most of the so called summer sat in the garage, although it was about the only thing in there to survive the flash flood we had when I came home to find it marooned in 3" of water!
