CTEK Charger & Halfords 10% Discount!

Post by David »

Just bought an CTEK MXS 5.0 with the cigarette light adaptor for £65 in total:

http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stor ... yId_255205

Image

Halfords are doing a 10% discount on any car maintenance products, ending very soon apparently. Voucher Code HCCM01
(here: http://www.voucherbox.co.uk/vouchers/halfords says it ends today, lucky me)

Apparently if I leave the country - my car gets lonely, sulks and decides to stop working. Need to check the usual culprits (radio and boot light) when I'm back.
Anything else I should be looking at?

I thought this was a pretty good deal, so I figured I would let you guys know as winter is coming.
The night is dark and full of terrors.

I've got one of those :D great bit of kit.

Mines currently on in the garage keeping the M topped up

Well worth the investment as winter is a killer for our batteries

Think I only payed £55 for my MXS 5.0 from Pro-parts

I think it was your thread that convinced me to go for one actually mate!

This worked out around £58, with the reassurance that I will get it by Thursday - Scarlet is going into the bodyshop on Friday for a bit of cosmetic surgery on her derrière, followed by shoe shopping (refurbishment)! ...so I need to plug her in as soon as I get back from Spain on Thursday night.

Fun!

Hi all,

Long time since i was last here: re battery conditioner, can I assume the leads attaches directly to the battery terminals in the boot or does one attach to the bodywork and if so, where do you suggest?

Hi Zedzen, welcome back then!

Yes, you can attach it straight to the battery, or you can also buy an adaptor that plugs straight into the cigarette lighter socket. However this will only work if you have the cigarette lighter wired live (works when the ignition is off).

Hope this helps,
David

I've got it connected direct to the battery with the supplied lead and the charger screwed to the wall in the garage, then just have to open the boot and connect the two leads, you don't have to leave the boot fully open just close it down so it rests on the "plungers" I put a photo up of the cable in the boot in 2008, its about half way down the post

There are charging points under the bonnet so saves you having the boot open :D

Also went to Halfords and was told that the ctek charger was on line only :(

Yes, unfortunately it looks like they can only get them straight from the suppliers.

I actually made a mistake when ordering and got my dates wrong. They said it would be delivered by Thursday... The 14th!! (Takes longer as it's coming to them from the supplier then on to me).

Well, it was today that I needed it by, but lucky I spotted my error early Monday evening, so I found one on EBay for a few pennies less; £59.99 without cgi adaptor, but delivered next day.

Thankfully, the eBay one arrived yesterday, and the Halfords one will be returned to store when it arrives next week.

I have just thought... If anybody wants this one I'm returning, let me know. I will see if they can transfer the stock to your local store. (Saves me PayPal and postage fees!). If not, I can arrange delivery at your expense :)

It was £5 cheaper on eBay, but the £65 from Halfords included the cigarette lighter adaptor (which costs £10 on eBay).

So Halfords is cheapest in this instance, however their delivery time will have lost them many customers I'm sure!

I have noticed that Ctek have now the new CTEK MXS 5.0T Battery Charger (With automatic temperature compensation)
As the old model does not have the temperature compensator, outlets are selling them cheaper than the newer model
clearing old stock springs to mind

I hope it lives up to my expectations then.
As I said above, I've ordered one as my battery went flat after the car was sat for 5 days.

Hopefully the CTEK can rejuvenate my battery, so it won't need replacing.

Will 7 hours of charge do much to the battery? I will be getting back from the airport at about 1-2am and need the car by 9am.

I believe you have a problem
Your battery should not have gone flat in that short time
Also you should never let a battery go flat deliberately, as this can
damage a battery and even kill it
The Ctek will charge and condition a healthy battery, but if there is a fault in the car i.e. a power drain
that needs to be sorted first.
I always thought it was a urban myth, :rtm: don't charge a battery with it on the ground
i.e. concrete as the moisture from the battery can discharge through to the concrete

Just depends on how bad the battery is but the longer the charger is on the better

Just this second got a call from Halfords...

The unit I ordered with them has arrived just arrived at my local store.
Weird...

Is that a coincidence that it has arrived on the day I was lead to believe; a week earlier than its actual delivery due date?
Or is it possible my email to the customer service team (politely accusing them of misinforming me) has had some effect?

The guy on the phone didn't sound happy that I said I'd be returning it because of the foretold delay in delivery, so I'm sure that a stock transfer to another store would be easier for him, as its specially ordered stock.
So, as before, if anybody is interested in this, I can try get it sent to your local Halfords?!

It will only charge the battery to its full capacity, and then it
trickle charges assuming the charger has this facility
With modern chargers/batteries a few hours is enough for a full charge, a quick charge
to get you started is ok, but does shorten the life of a battery
