This is where you can find out about valeting and detailing--washing, cleaning, polishing, waxing and other car care issues.

Anyone tried alternatives to Renovo & Autoglym?

Post by sirius-c »

Has anyone tried anything different to Renovo or Autoglyms offering for soft-top protection/proofing?
Was it a successful mission?

I'm rather interested in this, more the price actually:-

Fabsil water proofer & UV protection

A Lint roller for getting the fluff off your clothes then tent protector spray from your local camping store. Spray twice a year, beads perfectly

I have a can of Fabsil... does a mighty good job. However, tent treatment is still the best value for money and as good as the best "branded" treatments.

OK my roof was covered with green mould, I was always told never wash a material hood

Well i had just about enough of the mouldy hood

This is very unorthodox method for car hood cleaning but i will tell you the hood looks like new now

first i washed the hood with hot water pressure washer

Image

then i used warm soppy water

Image

then another power wash until fully clean, then let sit in the sun ( a nice hot day is helpful )

Image

then used this ( i worked for Chem-Dry and had a few cans in the garage but you can buy it )

Image

a good even covering when it is wet then let it dry in the sun

Image

it now looks great

at this point i have to see if it works for waterproofing

A small video, what do you think ?

Good result you achieved there !... I'm not sure about the "never wash a material hood"... everytime I go to the sonax carwash, they do just that...and use the water sprayer to rinse the soap out. Perhaps it has something to do with not getting the soap out and the fabric turning grey or whatever ?? Anyhow, if you use a decent fabric sealant once it's thoroughly dry, it should be good to go.

I've been told it's good practice to first vacuum the hood (remove abrasive dust/dirt) then give it a wash using something to agitate the surface dirt e.g. a soft scrubbing brush. For water-proofers I have tried both Fabsil Gold and Autoglym. Both work well but I find the Autoglym seems to make the water "bead" better and last for longer - I tend to use the whole bottle, in one go, on the hood and not 50% as suggested by Autoglym. :)

Simple..........Buy the autoglym kit for the stiff sponge when they have 2 for 1 offers, you get a cleaner and the right tool to do the job, then use the proofer in the kit, that works great but you will use it all and have loads of cleaner left. Next time get 5 litres of bog standard tent proofer for about a tenner and realise it's even better. Not often the cheapest solution is the best but it is in this case.

Ps the video above, the beads would have blown off in the breeze with a tent proofer ;-) I've got the same ikea glass though.

Ps don't forget a bucket of clean warm water and a sponge to quickly wash off any overrun, let it dry on paintwork and it's a nightmare to get off
