leather painting tips....

Post by handsomejackuk »

Hi,

removed my beige leather steering wheel tonight with a view to having a go at cleaning restoring and re colouring it... anyway some of the leather is badly scuffed and i have tried various grades of sandpaper to scuff / abrade it and get it smooth but its very soft difficult to sand and ends up in short strands. any tips to getting it all smooth.. ihave got 70 % of the wheel smooth ready to redye

any tips on how to get it all smooth...?

Have you thought about having it retrimmed. Search for Royal steering wheels, they do a great job to whatever spec you want. Very good prices too. Around £120-130 I believe. They can also re pad the wheel to make the rim thicker. If you can't be without your Z, they even do an exchange where you get your replacement then send them yours.
I had a red leather wheel, not quite as bad as yours but no matter what I tried I couldn't get it back to decent condition. Red hands .....

I always thought the beige leather on the steering wheel was very soft and easily marked. I used Liquid Leather on mine with very good results.

ok thanks Geoff, i did fone my local key cutter / leather repair place today and he was saying about Tarrago leather dye... £4.50. dont know whether it would be suitable...

i have sort of sanded some of the leather in the wheel with 160 sandpaper, . i get some pics in a few days to show what i have done there was a dew small dents and gouges in it and the sanding has seemed to smooth this, i did initiall try leather cleaner but this did nothing then moved on to white spirit acetone, cream cleaner and none of it worked so sanding was the only way to get the marks off it...

I don't know anything about Tarrago leather dye, but the Liquid Leather is more than a dye, it creates a new surface which is hard wearing and brings it back to the orginal look. My steering wheel wasn't as bad as yours, it just had small nicks in it caused by rings and it covered those with no problem and did a perfect job. And theres loads left in the bottle.
