Drive through car wash

Post by AlanDam »

My car is very dirty, and its to cold to go out and give it a wash.

So i was asking if going to a drive through car wash be a good idea.
I mean will it scrub my car so hard that it will ruin the soft top?

Would like to hear from people who have experience this

Thanks

Car wash bristles can scratch the paintwork of your car, not aware of any hastle with the softtop, apart from the chemical could ruin your waterproofing.

I personally wouldn't ever put mine through a carwash, rather see it dirty for a bit longer or worst use the lance and jetwash.

I'd never use a carwash on a nice car, soft top or not.

Find a jet / pressure wash place.

Or better still, don't be such a wus. Get out there and get yer hands wet!

I suggest your friendly local boys in the vacant car sales sites, only a fiver and no cold hands.

I've never put any of my beemers through a car wash! Either wash myself or take it to one of those hand car wash places for a fiver or somthing, though they can also cause scratches.

Don't do it,
I just bought a Zed which the previous owner regularly put through a car wash, it scratched the plastic rear window.

When driving at night I can see Bugger all. It also scratches the paintwork with swirl marks.

Put some warm clothes on and give it the tlc it deserves, you get a better finish and it doesn't mark the car.

It will also help you bond with the car ( ok Kipper, back in your cage, it's time for your medication )

Definitely agree - only put the car through a carwash if you don't care about the paintwork - it will cause significant damage and abrasion to your paintwork. The very thought of putting any of my cars through an automated car wash fills me with horror.

Soft tops and car washes

Post by Pat Slade »

I believe that the instruction books for those BMW's with plastic rear windows say quite positively "never put through a car wash". I would not be so worried about the paintwork, it's the rear window that gets ....d up!
When my Z1 went to a BMW dealer for it's first service they "kindly" put it throgh their car wash. They didn't know any better and clearly do not read BMW instruction manuals. It was winter and as soon as a car with lights on was behind me I couln't see a thing. The thousnands of tiny scratches diffused the light and made rear vision impossible. After much hassle the dealer put a new rear window in my hood.
I would say to you if you have a plastic rear window NEVER even consider a car wash.
