engine problem

Post by dansutton »

hi all

i've got a 97' z3 2.8 and at the front on the car under the radiator are two rubber pipes that then attach to a metal square shape pipe which has started to rust. Any ideas as to what the metal pipe is? And are they expensive to renew?

Thanks Danny.

If you try following the rubber pipes, you will see where they go . . .

Edit to add that I think they are around 60ish quid from the dealer.

Rust

Post by Mike Fishwick »

Why do you want to replace the pipe because it has begun to rust?

Scrape any loose rust off, treat it with a rust remover such as Jenolite, and paint it with Finnegans Red Oxide Primer followed by a few coats of their satin black.

All people can think of these days is fitting new bits, rather than doing something themselves. I painted mine about eight years ago, and it's still fine. The steering rack plating also goes off quickly, but decent paint lasts for ages.

If it's the power steering pipe, then they do fail on Z3's, as I know. If it is, I'd recommend a replacement be fitted. They're not cheap though.

A picture speaks a thousand words with problems like this though, so if you post one, someone will know.

You could also have a look on Realoem.com for the bit.

I can only hope that your indi has quoted for the wrong part or I have mistaken which part you mean as a mark up of more than 3 times is daylight robbery in my mind!

Painted

Post by Mike Fishwick »

Don't be afraid of a bit of rust - the PAS pipe is quite thick.

My PAS pipe was covered in rust when I bought the car at 13,000 miles, due to the epoxy coating on it having cracked and flaked off.

This was due to the absence of a bolt to secure the lug on the pipe to the steering rack, allowing the pipe to vibrate.

I fitted a new bolt, wire-brushed the pipe, treated it with rust remover, then primed it with Finnegans Red Oxide primer, and gave it a few coats of their satin black.

It's still as good as in this picture.
