ZunSport lower grill fitting & piccies.

Post by TitanTim »

Hi All,

Decided this morning as it was sunny for a change  to fit the ZunSport lower grill I received the other week from Simon at JustRoadster. Many thanks Simon and for your kindness in supplying the dimensions etc

There are two types of lower grill made for the Zed dependant if its a 4cyl or 6 cyl model. The grill I have fitted is for a 1.9 facelift, 4cyl model.

Grill arrived nicely packaged with clear fitting instructions. It's made of stay bright stainless steel and of very high quality with a lifetime guarantee by ZunSport against corrosion, discolouration etc. You can buy either the stainless steel or a black version which is slightly more expensive. The grill is held it situ with 2 clips at the bottom which clip to the back of the bumper with the top part being held in place by the number plate holder.

Image

On the 1.9 model there is actually no hole so to speak at the back of the aperture but is blanked off with a plastic plate held by rivets.

Image

Image

First job was to remove the number plate and holder. I realised that BMW fit anti theft fixings to hold the number plate so it took judicial use of the pliars to get the plastic off the number plate screws

With everything removed a good clean of the bumper :)

Image

The grill is a reasonably tight fit and I was slightly worried that sods law would dictate the clips would fall exactly in line with the rivets holding the plastic aperture backplate. Luckily all was OK. It can be a little tricky at first to get the grill in situ but with a little trial and error it went into place. You need to hold the grill with one hand whilst with the other hand gently prize the aperture back plate back enough for one of the clips to snap behind the bumper. Then do the other clip. Once the grill is in place a slight adjustment left or right so it sits centrally in the aperture.

Image

Image

Once I was happy with the fitment just a case of refitting the number plate holder which clips back under the bumper and screws on and refitting the number plate with some some new fixings and job done :)

Image

Image

A nice little addition :)

Cheers,

Tim.

Oh I quite like that. Sits further forward that the piece of blanking plastic that is there originally, making it more prominent than I expected.

Do you know if they do one for a pre-facelift 1.9? Is it the same front bumper as the post-facelift 1.9??

I'd probably be stuck between getting the silver one and the black one, as I don't have any chrome on my Silver Zed, I would be tempted towards black.

Any chance you can take a pic from even further away, just to get an idea of how these look at a distance.....but please........No videos

P.S Did you remove your fog lights or did the car not come with them? Could just be my eyes but looks like you have blanking plates in place?

Hi Daniel,

As far as I'm aware but will stand corrected the pre and post facelift front bumpers remained unchanged but here are the dimensions that Simon at Just Roadster suplied me with,

Z3 Lower Grille 1996 - 2002 (1.9 ) 665 mm x 85 mm.

Z3 Lower Grille 1996 -2002 ( 2.2 - 2.9 ? ) 760mm x 150mm
The dimensions are approx.

I went for the silver mainly to match the chrome gills :) not sure how the black would look but obviously alot more subtle but I like chrome anyways.

Will take some more pics for you when I'm out and about.

My zed came without the foglamps for which it just has the blanking plates. To be honest I've never used fog lamps even when I've had them on cars.

Cheers,

Tim.

Thanks Jonttt, wasn't sure about fitting aftermaket bits as I'm always dissapointed in quality and fitment etc but have to say pleased with this. Simon mentioned the quality was spot on and was right, think he's fitted one to his Zed which has the larger grille.

Cheers,

Tim.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Just thought i would show you mine

This is on a 2.8 with the larger mouth.
I think the Z looks very impressive in both versions and as well as the Stainless Steel finish you can have Black. This is not painted but a special coating.
If you want more info then go to my website I have lots of details to help www.justroadster.com :pc
Another thing to notice is I have parking sensors behind the grille and they still work just the same.......how cool is that. 8-)

Nice one TitanTim glad your happy with it. Cool stuff

Finish the job

Post by BonBon »

I obviously think that the job is only half done

Here is one from the SEMA show in Vegas last week. It was a cool show - just not enough european cars - and the pimped up Bentleys and Rollers were sacrilegious.

Hi BonBon,
I take it the Z3 is yours.....cool.
The Grilles look very much like a Zunsport grille?
So what's next to do with your Z?
Do you have much of a following in your country in regards to the Z3?

Sorry for all the questions!! :cheers

I didn't have time to look at the rear of the car. The show (automotive aftermarket) was so overwhelming with over ~ 300 show cars outside and in all booths that I rushed though. (I was in Detroit for EV business and only had one day to walk the show)

Because of the historic import taxes, until recently there was no ability and awareness for high end vehicles and aftermarket mods. Things are slightly changing in the new car area - but the aftermarket is still lagging - in part because the authorities are very pedantic (I got pulled over for non blinding Xenon lights and "suspicious" exhaust tips). Not quite sure if its enlightened or behaving like natives. I guess it depends what your benchmark is - some US states don't have ANY annual testing after the car is purchased.

For comparison Israel has ~150 Z3 (population 7m) UK ~70,000 Z3 (population 60m) US ~ 200,000 Z3 (population 300M)

US and UK a Z3 per ~one thousand people
Israel a Z3 per ~50 thousand people

Now you can understand why my '98 1.9l at 200k km is worth over 10 thousand quid.

ps I don't have any mods planned for the moment - no itchy fingers...
I painstakingly did the mesh grills myself:

It was part of the selection brought by the DUB magazine.

Have a look towards the end of the album:

The grill for the 1.9 is pretty subtle which is why I like it, not too much in your face and just think it looks nicer than a gaping hole. Not so keen on the bonnet grills which you can get in the same grill pattern which I feel looks too much.

Precisely, it only clips in and easily removed without damage. Like you say swings and roundabouts, one mans junk is another mans pot of gold. Just like I wouldn't fit a hardtop

Even more so why I wouldn't fit one Robert, I can see it would help with winter comfort but kills the Zeds looks IMHO, but I guess in winter you think more of the practicalities. I use the Zed in all weathers but still wouldn't go for a hardtop but yes the 1er is cosy in this weather
