2.2i - What revs should it be pulling?

Post by ktg1000 »

Hi All. I've just bought a 2002 2.2i Z3 and was curious to see what revs other 2.2i's pull on the flat at certain sppeds, say 30, 60, 80 mph etc. Could anyone please give me accurate info on your 2.2i's? All the best, KTG1000

final drive

Post by Mike Fishwick »

The 2.2 final drive gearing seems to vary with year - some use the same as a 2.8, which is pretty low anyway at 25 mph/1000 rpm in top gear, while some years are even lower.

Look on RealOEM.com and input your VIN number.

I have a 2002 2.2i Sport and I think it's 2k rpm at 30 in third. Haven't noted any other speeds but if I remember to I shall.

That doesn't look right,it would mean fifth gear was less than 16mph/1000rpm.It would mean that your car would only manage 94mph at 6000rpm.

The 2.8 is about 26mph/1000rpm in fifth.

rpm

Post by Mike Fishwick »

Most UK tests give a 140 mph top speed, and the engine revs to 6250 rpm, which - if it runs to peak rpm in top gear - would give overall gearing of 22.4 mph/1000 rpm in 5th gear.

At 3000 rpm this would equate to a speed of 67.2 mph.

I find at upto 4000rpm it pulls really well. Above that, it gets a bit loud and the girls walk about into the local kebab shop.

not sure exactly how to describe it but does anyone with the 2.2 notice some slight thing happens at about 4000rpm.its like a very very slight hesitation.not sure if its to do with the vanos but its like something opens or adjusts .sorry for my rubbish explanation!its just something my senses pick up for a split second when i get to 4000 rpm.

4200rpm

I have what feels like a flat spot at about 4200rpm in my 2.2. Seems to start to pull strong again about 5500rpm and then all the way through to the limiter.
