Progress is looking great! Looking forward to seeing this sometime! Throttle sounds like it could be a problem with short travel, I would expect you'd want a nice long controllable one :D . Also did the engine come with electronic throttles or did you have to source them too?

If you've now got more clearance near the top of the bulkhead I would definitely recommend triangulating the strut brace to the bulkhead!

Its got a single throttle about 90mm diameter. That was another ebay job about £200 delivered new.
Good point about the triangulation. I will have a look at that over the next week. It should stiffen the front end up good.
markrnorton wrote:Mark

Mark
No Mark I haven't yet. The clutch is not connected up so I cant bleed either. The engine has to come out and the transmission off so I can get a hard line onto the slave. I plan to take the hard line to the top of the bellhousing and then there will be a very short hose needed. The incoming clutch pipe now has AN4 female on the bulkhead.
I hear bleeding the ABS can be a pain. Im going to use a pressure bleed and crack all the pipes to the ABS before going to each caliper. Fingers crossed that will do it.
I hit a snag last weekend getting the steering pump pulley on. Its a heavy press and I snapped a stud of in the pump shaft :head: I may be able to sort it, if not its money and time delay (new pump).
Good news is that I have found a company to coat the manifolds. They will charge £300+vat and Im taking them over next week. While they are away (for 2-weeks) the engine is coming out so I can paint the engine bay. I should then be able to get it fitted for the last time, plumb up everything and fire up the beast.
I'm not running the car till spring now. At best the main work will be finished late November and its well into the gritting season then so it will be staying in the garage.
I have decided to part with a whole load more cash and do a proper job on the brakes and wheels. I will probably go for CSL discs at the front and new calipers front and rear 6/4 pots. For wheels I quite like CCW Classics. They are custom made to any width and offset. I need to figure out the best sizes. 10.5 or 11"x18 on the rear is the aim :) Anyone got any guidance on the biggest wheel that will fit, and offset?

I have the steering shaft finished and trial fitted today. I'm very pleased with it and from the pic you can see its quite central though the gap between the inner and outer header primary tubes. Clearances are fine. Job done for that one.
Image

Now I have the smaller Cats I have made the central exhaust. It just needs welding up. Happy with that too, so its been a good day.
Image
DSC02369 by deansie1712, on Flickr
I'm going to include a mount for the central exhaust onto the transmission mount. This will hold the front of the exhaust steady. The flexi joint is there to allow for engine movement, so it doesnt stress the exhaust. The standard Z3m exhaust has this feature.
Im starting to get excited! Methinks the rear tyres dont look wide enough for 580Nm.

I have the central exhaust welded and finished now. It routes nicely down the transmission tunnel and all parts are above the bottom of the floorpan. The rear part of the exhaust is a Magnaflow X-pipe to balance the flow.

Tomorrow I am taking the manifolds to here for coating. They sounded really helpfull on the phone so think they should do a good job of it. Will post a few pics when I get them back.

There is plenty of clearance around the starter. I will post some pics when the engine is back in.

Recent work has been all about preparing and painting the engine bay. I also have mounts made for the computer and relay box. Progress is going to be a lot faster now this is all done.

Got the manifolds back Friday. Here are a few pics showing the ceramic coating. This should keep the rust off and is supposed to insulate, but it seems a thin layer.

The engine bay is now prepared. The powder coating company let me down this week so have lost a week while another company (hopefully) finish all the mounts and brackets. When I get them back the engine will be fitted and can get on with wiring

Got all the mounts and brackets back from powder coating yesterday. Its the first time I have had this done and Im a convert. Cheap and a really good job - thick durable coating. All the brackets shown cost me £45. Todays job is to fit everything and try to finish the mechnical aspects of the installation in the engine bay. The rear end of the car needs a biit of work yet - the diff has to come off to fit an offset rear bush and to get the driveshaft on. I will post some more photos later.

It will be close to finished Roy but its not seeing the road till Spring now. Its SORN and I have the brakes to sort out and it needs a re-spray etc etc. I will arrange a meet in April so you can all see the car.

Progress is a bit faster now, as I mentioned. Pics show how it is after a few hours work this weekend. Remaining jobs are power steering hoses, fit driveshft, exhaust and wiring. Oh I also have to mount the accelerator pedal and find a way to get the harness and connector through the firewall.

My new wheels are now made and are in transit to should get them within the week :D

Its the standard radiator. Most E36 swaps seem to reuse the standard radiator so I think it will be ok. I need to buy a lecky fan for it - Im looking out for a secondhand Volvo V70 unit.

Gentleman, your threads on the mods that you are doing to your cars makes for fascinating reading.

Just having seen Z3Rude's post about the BMW 850 with a 5.6L V12, just out of interest, do you think that engine would fit into a Z3?

Sorry if its a daft question.

There is a chap over here transplanting a V10 into a Z3 Coupe.

I reckon that will work, the engine makes monster torque from idle so it'll cruise at 1700rpm at 70 no probs IMO! Your average TDI will be sat only just above that with less lb/ft.

UPS showed up today with an early Christmas present :D

CCW seem to have done a good job, wheels ordered manufactured and delivered from Florida all within 16 days. They must have made an error with the value on the import paperwork since the duty was about half what I was expecting :D

Fronts 18x8.5 rears 18x11

Enjoy...

My STR does 70 @ 1700rpm too which with the autobox is just over what it does around town as the box seems to keep the revs around 1400-1500 when pootling around.

Nice wheels!! What's the offsets? You getting some decent suspension aren't you? I know you recently refurbed the OEM suspension but you'll need to get it to look and handle right with that engine and those big wheels!

Lovely wheels Mark although I dare say some may find them a bit "bling"
Good job they won't fit Tim's car otherwise he'd be after them
