Help from 2.8 drivers!
Help from 2.8 drivers!
Recently purchased a 2.8.
Little suprised at the fuel consumption
What should I get from a full tank?
Only getting around 200 mile, methinks something is wrong?
Tried driving it like an old woman, fuel consumption was worse?

Re: Help from 2.8 drivers!
Well is that city driving or motorway? The difference is huge between the two (mine does about 25mpg in town and 38 on the motorway). Has it been recently serviced? The green lights alone are not enough of an indicator as they can be easily reset.TaffZee wrote:Recently purchased a 2.8.

Check your tyre pressures also - 2.4 all around on 17" wheels seems to have a noticeable impact on economy. Keep the revs between 2500 and 3000 for best fuel economy.

We did a 400 mile round trip to Newquay in west wales and i dont hang about approx 80 to 100 on motorway and approx 10mph+ over the speed limit on twisty mountain roads, this was the begining of November, it had just been serviced and we are running vpower. We got 29mpg and that was fully combined. Since we have been back we have just done the day to day driving and we have just dropped down to 27.6mpg.

If I drive like an old man I get 250 mile per tank, if I drive it like any other normal person would I get anywhere from 190-210 miles per tank.TaffZee wrote:Recently purchased a 2.8.

Older maybe,wiser obviously.
Re: Help from 2.8 drivers!
That’s all I get for town driving/short journeys, There are many posts about it, if you go back to posts 5 or 6 years ago there were others with similar figures. The early 2.8 engine is not as good as the later one for fuel consumptionTaffZee wrote:Recently purchased a 2.8.

I only get 180-240 max per tank. It all depends whether its long or short runs.
In the summer i recorded a 40.4mpg on a 60mile trip driving like a granny and averaged 30-32mpg normal relaxed driving. But in this weather i struggle to get over 28mpg and im averaging 25-27mpg.
So id say dont worry i wouldnt think theres anything wrong with your 2.8

Re: Help from 2.8 drivers!
I get exactly the same on normal driving to and from work (15mins each way) in my 2.8, on the motorway I can get double that from a tank.TaffZee wrote:Recently purchased a 2.8.

I am very wary of some of these claims , the only way to check is to record how much fuel used between fill-ups against noted mileage (converting litres to gallons precisely).I suspect most of these amazing mileages are from the onboard computer.I checked mine properly couple of years ago and got just over 26mpg with mixed driving.
If you want economy you don't drive a 2.8 sports car

When went to wales it worked out we did 240 miles and tank was on a quater when we filled up to come back home.

Over the years I've got into habit of always filling to the brim and zeroing the trip meter everytime I fill any of the cars up. The fuel guage on the Z3 can be a bit erratic and the consumption on the OBC has sometimes been quite far out. Also sudden unexplained fluctuations in fuel economy can be a sign that something isn't right with the car.
The Z3 (99 M52TU) can return anything from 27 to 35mpg - the 35mpg was over a long weekend meandering across the Fens to Suffolk and Norfolk. Overall I get around 30mpg. The Z4 varies from 30 to 36mpg depending on which one of us is driving it.

This is exactly how i have tested mine on 3 different occasions and i get 37-38 mpg. I am really pleased with the fuel consumption. I would say i am always a careful driver (apart from the time i had to follow JonTT on a meet ) old zeddy will no doubt have had his moments but he is retired in his new home

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
I didnt mean i was keeping up with you all the way, i should have said FOR A VERY SHORT DISTANCE ONLY, i meant i had to accelerate fast to see which exit you took on that massive overgrown roundabout, then i could see a little red dot in distance - that woke me and zeddy upJonttt wrote:Wow so 2.8 = 3.2, I like the math

38 is the best i ever did, doing a constant 60mph without much overtaking etc and on a longish run... so i wouldn't exactly call it typical, don't worry! Definitely does around 32-33 at ~75 though.TaffZee wrote:Must admit it needs a service, checked the tank no leaks.
On the motorway ime only getting around 26 to the gallon doing a steady 70mph.
38 to the gallon never got that on my 1.9.
Thanks for your help.
I used to have a 1.9 and the fuel consumption on that wasn't much better than on the 2.8 on the same roads and same driving style, maybe 2-3 mpg overall. Different story when you push the go pedal on the 2.8 though... I'd say take it for a service though, mine always feel just a tad sweeter after it's been looked after. Check your tyres as well! And as I said, if you're concerned about saving fuel, 2500rpm for changing up and for steady driving... anything above that brings more smiles but costs you more in petrol. Your choice!
