Got the Z3 out of the garage this morning, sponged off 2 weeks of dust and later was standing in the kitchen looking at the shiney curves reflecting the sunlight - thought: what a great looking car.
Fast forward to this evening - Z3 back in the garage and the Z4 on the drive. Standing in the kitchen again looking at the last of the sunshine reflecting off the reversed curves of the door and the crease line sweeping up over the rear wing - thought: what a great looking car.
Which is best? We don't know - we just enjoy them.

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

To be fair i do quite like the Z4 but i think the newer model with the tin top has really gone back to its roots so has put me off the ragtop. Another point also i could not get my head around was having a Z4 over a Z3m but at the end of the day my heart ran with swapping the V6 TT for a TTS so the 3 stays with me for nowgookah wrote:.Canman wrote:Closet Z4 fancier thenjontymo wrote: That brings back a few memories! the TT kept me away from that swap

Not being the owner of a Zed at all and with an independent perspective, I agree with Gookah and would say that the Z Roadster logo is a Z4 - look at the angled line at the top of the door and the shape of the crease from the bottom of the windscreen pillar to just behind the front wheel.Evmundo wrote:No that is defo a Z3 as the Icon, no right angles..........just smooth curvesgookah wrote:but you have to wonder..... they chose a Z4 for the forum icon.......
As an ex owner of a Z3, I have to say that the shape of the pre-facelift wide body is my favourite, given the choice of the Z3 and the old Z4. The narrow hipped smaller engined derivatives were somehow lacking to me and the face (& ar*e) lift version just didn't look as purposeful from the rear.
The problem with the Z3 to me, was the 'parts bin' make up of the car and some dodgy dynamics, which didn't live up to the cars styling. My 2.8 was a great cruiser, but the tramlining, which possibly could have been cured with some more investment in suspension mods, prevented it from being a great sports car. I had more confidence in my diesel daily driver for a rapid blat through the back roads. I would have hated to have bought a new one for close to 30k only for an MX5 costing half as much to run rings around it in the handling stakes!
The Z4 was probably a better car dynamically, but I haven't driven one so can't really say, but in my eyes had the sort of looks that only a mother could love. The Z4 Coupe though, is another matter and looks great, but sort of defeats the convertible objective.
Personally, I think the new Z4 with the folding metal roof is the one. It has road presence and if I had the money, I'd be down at the dealers ordering one. Oh for the right six numbers to fall out of that bloody machine!!!!
Oh and in answer to the original question at the start of the thread . . . . .NO.

The logo has a 'Z' carved into the side of the front wing.....
If you think its a Z3, then I don't think your opinion on the look of the two cars counts......
Oh, and if you need more evidence, the door mirror is where you have your little triangular windows....

Your just plain nasty...... The headlights on the logo look nothing like Z4, please look again, anyway isn't art in the eye of the beholder? So could look like an MX5!!!gookah wrote:Evmundo wrote:No that is defo a Z3 as the Icon, no right angles..........just smooth curvesgookah wrote:but you have to wonder..... they chose a Z4 for the forum icon.......

Yes I agree, BMW have moved the Z4 into new ground with the latest car, it looks like a much more expensive machine and has a real presence. It's funny as I thought the pre-production photos looked hideous, but perhaps it was the dodgy blue colour they used.Mouldy wrote: Personally, I think the new Z4 with the folding metal roof is the one. When I was a Z3 owner I have to say for a long time I never could quite "get" Z4s. Then one day it just sort of clicked and I had to have one and never looked back. The rear and side views did it for me. The nose took a bit longer to love.
I agree the dashboard could look better though the built in sat nav helps. However, I like the look of the rest of the interior the seats, the centre and rear consoles etc. I don't miss the printed pattern on the leather trim of my old Z3 which on reflection was naff.
In terms of looks I guess the Z4 really is a marmite car! I'll save my views on the driving experience for another thread
