Jonesy's Z3 Build Thread (U/D 23/06/11)

Post by Jonesy »

ok well this is a work in progress style thread to show you guys whats going on with my Z3.

The Z3 as i got it:
Image

The first job on the (ever growing) to do list was the retrofitting of chrome roll bars and a clear acrylic wind deflector.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I think the bars look really good, as the Z's without roll hoops just look abit unfinished to me.

the clear acrylic wind deflecter works well for shorter people as my girlfriend now doesnt complain about the wind messing up her hair untill around 85MPH wheras before we struggled to reach 50 without complaints. but im a 6" lad so my head already pops over the windscreen, does make a noticable differance when the windows are up though.

no noticable effect on mpg or speed on the other hand, so thats a bonus :)

Okay so my BMW Park Lane London Tax disk holder arrived in the post today, approximately 16 hours after paying for it on ebay (pleased  )

so quickly braved today's rainy morning to stick it on in replacement of the KIA holder, the car was owned by a KIA dealers wife previously. so an neccesary swap in my book.

here it is (apologies for camera phone picture, my camera had no charge)
Image

fitted (now the weather has cleared out):

much more OEM than before, korean tax disk holder is just so KDM, lol

Right well next on my list of things to do is get a personalised number plate sorted, there are two im am looking at for the moment and one is much more (too) expensive than the other.

Image

L J60NES = £599
JO09NSY = £850

I'm hoping to bring some unspent holiday money back in two weeks which would be nice as I'm allowing myself to spend US$75.00 a day which I don't think I will...

Your opinions on a postcard please

Black Diamond pads are on offer here if you buy them at the same time as the Black Diamond discs. Got mine sitting in the front room waiting to be fitted.

lots of hours research so far, very little action though :( purely due to financial constraints. but better to be prepered eh?

hopefully will be able to do at least one thing on the list every month. althrough some of those are biggies

if anyone has any useful info like vikingsven's i'd be interested to know. i have been rather conservative with my prices so that i'm sure i can afford the mods, as opposed to realising that i can't do a certain one and being stuck for £'s :) so hopefully i can be pointed in the direction of the best prices

Your car is too old for either of those plates. You can't fit newer reg plates to an olser car. You can fit older plates to a newer car.

ooooh :( from the way its worded on the dvla registrations website i assumed that it meant you cannot try and make your car look newer than its is, and as no-one would believe its a 09 plate z3 that would be okay?

will have to investigate...

Jonesy.

Looks good so far.

Where did you get the roll bars and what was the overall quality in terms of the welds around the joins.

Thanks

got it through a reccomended website from justroadster.com cant remember the actual one, just e-mail their sales team and they will let ya know.

weld quality is okay, i didnt think it was very good to begin with but because of the placment of them, they arn't really noticable on the car, especially with the deflector fitted.

cost circa £200 for it shipped from / through china.

Luke liking your ideas but careful mate with the letter/number spacing on the plates as they are illegal and you could get points on your liscence by a strict policeperson and the BMW badge on the left is a big no no too with the law. also the number plate must have a postcode from the place of manufacture at the bottom.
your MOT inspector will also fail your zed with incorrect spacing etc.
on saying that mine doesn't have the postcode but have zroadster.net

good luck with your mod's :D

my perception was a £60 fine and the dvla can withraw the issue of the private plate if they so wish. if i had a illegally spaced plate, i would run with legal ones in the boot just in case mr plod takes a dislike.. at which time i'd give him the puppy dog eyes and swap the plates over n hope that does the trick

(would swap the plates mot time too)

whats wrong with the bmw badge? only allowed nationality flags or similar?

Well time for an update as its been a long long time since my last one. Not alot has changed really except for the private number plate, but I took an hour out this evening to give it a good clean (no polish though, started to get dark) anyway heres the pics (excuse the phone camera pictures, don't do it justice :( ):

Hopefully more updates soon!

Nice motor, glad to see you also have the same roll hoops. I agree the quality of the product and welds is good, let down only by the finish. I polished all the welds up on mine using my dremel, and they look great now.

One thing i did notice is that they stiffen up the back end of the car and make the handling more positive. makes sense really as they span the two welded joints of the outside of the car.

From picture 1? That's our dog Belle. She's my number one car cleaning fan and will sit outside and watch me for hours. Also she likes a ride out in the Z now and then. But only when she's clean and even then I cover the passenger side with a blanket!

time for an update, the suspension has now been lowered. thats 30mm at the rear and 45mm on the front. £70 delivered springs off of eBay seem to be more comforatble than my standard spings were. Also now have 13mm spacers on the rears to fill the arch a bit better

& a few more different angles:
