FS Z3M Roadster, 50k miles, SOLD
FS Z3M Roadster, 50k miles, SOLD
I’m selling my June ‘98 M Roadster that I bought last October. Date of first registration 30.01.1999. Arctic silver with all black interior, with a sensible 50,600 miles (rising slowly as I use it on sunny days!).
I viewed 5 roadsters before buying this one, and ended up driving to Cornwall (from Liverpool!) for it after a lengthy exchange of e-mails \ phone calls \ pictures. MOT 1st March 2012, will tax to end of February 2012.
I’ve not owned the car very long, but I bought the car for a specific reason; to do this year’s road trip to the Alps in with my other half and a group of car loving friends. It didn’t miss a beat on the trip and didn’t use a drop of oil in the 3k mile trip. It makes a good noise too!
The car’s service history is comprehensive; I have a thick file of receipts and I’ve summarised the history in a spreadsheet. The car has been well cared for by its previous owners, and I too have looked after the car, and have spent a significant amount of time and money refurbishing it underneath. I’ve probably spent over 100 hours working on it and bringing it to what is hopefully mechanically great condition, with some very subtle improvements. It lives in a carpeted garage and the previous owner also garaged the car, and apart from the holiday it hasn’t seen rain while I’ve had it.
The service history is as follows, I’ve noted when the Vanos filter has been changed by the independent garages. The main dealers will have replaced the filter as required. As you will see, the car has been serviced at very short mileage intervals –
23/09/1998 – 0 miles, BMW Blue Bell, Crewe, Pre-delivery check
10/09/1999 – 1,387 miles, BMW Blue Bell, Crewe, Running in check (very important this is done at c1200 miles).
13/10/2000 – 7,739 miles, BMW Blue Bell, Crewe, Oil service
19/01/2002 – 13,676 miles, BMW Blue Bell, Crewe, Inspection 1, brake fluid
02/07/2004 – 18,597 miles, Atlas BMW Specialist, York, Oil service incl. Vanos filter
24/03/2006 – 28,332 miles, Atlas BMW Specialist, York, Inspection 2 service incl. Vanos filter, brake fluid, coolant
09/05/2007 – 32,531 miles, Atlas BMW Specialist, York, Oil service incl. Vanos filter, front discs \ pads
04/03/2009 – 35,522 miles, GRS, Burnley, brake fluid change
05/06/2009 – 43,895 miles, Hickleys, Bridgewater, Inspection 1
I purchased the car 23rd Oct 2010 at 45k miles -
18/11/2010 – 46,009 miles, David Paul BMW Specialist, Warrington, Inspection 2, Vanos filter, brake fluid, coolant tested ok
The car is currently showing 2 green lights, so won’t need another service for a while, and won’t need another Inspection 2 for a long time.
In addition to the above regular services, the car has had the following items attended to prior to my ownership, along with other smaller items not listed –
29/10/2004 – 21,367 miles, Atlas BMW Specialist, York - Install AC Schnitzer suspension, £744 fitted
20/11/2004 – c22k miles, BMW Scotthall, Leeds, new rear window, £116
01/04/2006 – c28k miles, Atlas BMW Specialist, York, new roof pump, £223
27/06/2006 – 29,816 miles, GRS, Burnley, Install H&R anti roll bars, £353
Since buying the car last October at 45k miles, I have comprehensively refurbished the front and rear suspension and brakes, and have attended to numerous other items –
New windscreen wipers
Autoglym hood cleaner and protector (50% left, will include in sale)
Autoglym leather cleaner and protector for interior
4 Michelin Pilot Sport 3 tyres, cost £440 whilst on promotion (was £550 originally) – premium tyres, only done 4k miles
Installed nylon seat bushes to cure rocking seats (common Z3 problem)
Fitted magnetic stone guards to protect the rear arches
Fitted a tonneau cover (£80)
Fitted front and rear poly bushes, including poly differential bush which I modified to be more stable (£150)
Rolling road, 3 power runs, average 318bhp flywheel, 255bhp wheels, 250ft\lb torque. Healthy engine, Vanos perfect.
Fitted Rogue Engineering rear shock top mounts, a known weakness on many BMW’s (£110)
Fitted new rear discs, handbrake shoes, handbrake mechanism refurb kit (£150)
Front and rear brake calipers refurbished, painted, new seals and springs (£70)
ETB yellow stuff front and rear pads, really improves stopping power and pedal response & less dust than standard (£120)
Bosch Silver battery (£70)
Seam welded the rear chassis cross member as a preventative measure, as Z3’s can have problems with popped welds (£110).
Also added welding to the ARB mounts and diff mount, again purely preventative as it’s an area of possible weakness.
Modified the rear suspension subframe to allow adjustment of camber and toe at the rear. Lowered Z3’s have too much negative camber and wear out the inner edge of the tyres. This mod solves it, tyre wear is nice and even after 4k miles.
Fitted camber adjustment bolts on the front suspension, again preventing uneven tyre wear problems.
4 wheel suspension alignment set to AC Schnitzer settings – report is in the history file. Feels planted and secure.
Many suspension and brake components sandblasted and powder coated, or cleaned and painted.
Front and rear wheel bearings replaced (£150)
New ball joints, inner and outer fronts, and new tie rod ends for steering rack (£80)
ARB drop links front and rear replaced (£40)
Exhausts removed, painted with heat resistant black paint, polished tailpipes.
Fitted a steering rack from a standard Z3 (£200) as it’s a quicker ratio. Excellent upgrade, steering response is much sharper.
Fitted Goodridge braided stainless brake hoses all round £70, plus new brake fluid.
Allow wheels refurbished with new centre badges.
‘BMW’ business CD player, actually a Rover CD player with M badge. Same one as offered as an option originally (£80).
Upgraded Pioneer front component speakers (£110)
Arctic silver touch up paint purchased, included in sale. Stone chips on bonnet all filled in and then polished.
Air conditioning regassed before the holiday, with full system check. 100% perfect working order.
Front bumper resprayed in June 2011 due to stone chips (£240).
New main dealer number plates.
1 litre M spec oil - not opened as didn’t use any oil on the trip.
Loads of other little things done, bought lots of new nuts\bolts\screws from BMW and used stainless where I could.
Negatives –
The bonnet has got 2 very small (<5mm) dents at the front where I dropped a spanner on it, I’m going to try to get them removed in the next few days, but there’s a crossmember behind them so it might not be possible.
I spent a weekend filling, sanding and polishing stone chips on the bonnet, it’s not 100% perfect but having seen a few other Zed’s of this age I’m happy that it looks pretty good. It’s an honest car with some front end stone chips.
As you will see, I’ve spent a lot of time and about £3,000 in refurbishing the car, servicing, tyres, etc since I’ve had it. I’ve had a lot of help from this forum as well, for which I’m very grateful.
I would hope that people on this forum can appreciate the time and effort invested in bringing it to a state of excellent health for a 13 year old car. I know colour choice is personal, but I believe that the silver paint and plain black interior still look contemporary.
Final price reduction to £7,495 including 6 months road tax.
If you have any questions please get in touch.
Thanks, Ian

I met up with Ian for the first time last week and had a good look around his car.
For anyone looking / thinking of a Z3m I can't recomment this car enough.
Either as a daily driver or a keeper its perfect for me ie your not paying a premium for ultra low mileage were every mile you put on the car costs you a fortune and its not too high a mileage that your afraid to use as a daily driver.
To say its a good honest car is an understatement. Its one of those cars you can tell has been owned by a real car enthusiast with the type of attention to detail no dealer would ever put into a car. As Ian says its not been "modded" but refreshed / renewed / improved with an emphasis on mechanicals and resulting in a car that is as about sorted as you'll ever get whilst retaining the OEM looks and styling.
To be honest if your looking for a Z3m you would be stupid not to look at this car
Good luck with the sale Ian, I'm just sorry we will lose you from the forum but maybe one day you'll be back

HI Ian,
Quick question on your photo's, 1 of the pictures showed 4 cam bolts, can you confirm the size of these and how you fitted them please. My last company made all the cam bolts for jag, Landrover and Ford, and these items look remarkably like them. Possibility of being able to supply the camber adjusting hardwear if you can confirm the size of the thread and the underhead bolt length.
Thanks

They are M12 x 1.5 x 98mm on realoem, and according to my invoice they are BMW part no. 33321095102 at £4.35 each, 4 required for camber and toe adjustment.
I fitted them using guide plates I had machined and then welded to the trailing arm brackets, based on drawings I found on t'internet. See my old refurb thread in M section, but there's info on line, I think I posted links to it.
PS - I still have a complete set of 8 guide plates for camber and toe adjustment that I had made as a spare set to sell to another member. Cost me £40, available now at the special price of... £40! (posted)
Cheers, Ian
Just to be clear, on the flikr pictures there are several 'before' pictures of the diff mount \ chassis cross member, and then ones showing it seam welded. I just wanted to demonstrate that the welding I had done was preventative and not a 'fix' to a failing boot floor or diff mount.
Given that I had the entire rear subframe and suspension removed, it was a no brainer to have it welded while access was unimpeded.

Hi all,
I've decided to exclude the additional extra's from the sale and reduce the price of the car. So, now excluded are the wind deflector, tonneau cover, Bentley book and the original steering rack. I will put these on e-bay this weekend, and advertise them separately on here.
Price of the car, with 6 months tax, reduced to £8,150 to forum members.
Cheers, Ian

As a result of getting a new job, I'm now more keen to sell the Z3M and sell the daily 320d, and get into a Z4MC.
Asking price reduced to £7,800 to forum members. If anyone wants more pictures or info please let me know. Now taxed to end of Feb.
PS - I'm holding on to the tonneau, original steering rack and wind deflector, in case the buyer wants them. For those that have expressed interest in these, if no joy in selling the car in the next few weeks I'll be in touch.

It's lower than I'd value it at too!!!!shantybeater wrote:^^ besides that when clean it looks
Very suprised this is still for sale, clearly a well sorted example and at an extremely good price! (infact under what i'd value it at). Whats happened to the roadster market?!!? I thought poverty would drive people away from everyday M3's and onto these!
This is as low as it goes, I've spent £10k on buying and improving \ maintaining it. No regrets, have loved working on it and driving it, just thought I'd get about £8.5k for it. Given that it's had pretty much everything done to it, I could keep it until next spring and put another 2k miles on and it wouldn't cost me a bean.
I'm on the lookout for a Z4MC, and there are similar stories on Z4-forum. Good cars just not fetching the kind of money they would have done even 6 months ago. Seems like there really is a recession on after all.
As for the colour, it really is such a personal thing that if silver doesn't float someones boat, then I understand that. I really wanted Imola paint when I was buying, but more important for me was a plain black interior.
I love the silver now I've had it, it's a timeless, neutral colour and with silver wheels and plain black leather it has aged really well and is (IMO!) a very handsome car.

Hi Ian. I have to agree with c_w on the advert. You show the car at a race track and parts of it on the floor, now you want everyone to assume you are a top engineer, if not they may think its not as an M should be. Why dont you just advertise it as all the other m`s that have been sold sucessfully. We as Zroadster members understand what great things you have done, but there is the outside world to consider.

The Pistonheads advert (i.e. the Outside World) doesn't go into anywhere near the same detail as this forum. This is an enthusiasts forum, so I thought the detail would be a good thing!
I used pictures from my holidays as I've not had the weather / time to take new ones.
I showed the components prior to assembly as I thought it would illustrate what I've done better than just words.
Having driven the car 3k miles around the Alps, I'm confident that it's reassembled properly, despite resolutely not being a 'top engineer'.
Why don't I advertise it like all the others??
Thanks for the positive comments in amongst the other posts!
Ian for what it is worth I think you have advertised it just right with the Pistonheads ad being less detailed for the general masses and more detail on here for the true enthusiasts who will appreciate the amount of work already gone into the car.
I did consider yours when I was looking around last weekend after a recommendation from Jonttt but it was just outside my budget for my future plans. It does look like a stunning car and hope to get mine upto the same standard some day. All the best with the sale someone will be knocking on your door soon, you may just have to be patient as it took over a month for someone to buy my Jag and I was starting to get depressed about it then out of the blue it sells so don't despair.

Re: M
Why are they unhelpful? This is my honest opinion. You have to ignore the back-patting from fellow forum members, the details and photos of bits of the car off the car WILL be narrowing your audience massively.Ian Kelly wrote: Sorry guys, don't understand some of these comments and they aren't very helpful.

I accept that what I've done to the car will limit it's appeal - some people will want a totally OEM car, and this isn't one. I know that. It's not the pictures and the advert that limit the market for the car, it's the fact it has some minor changes from OEM. That's MY honest opinion.
The car IS the car, there's no point trying to hide the changes from OEM, especially not on this forum. Better to be up front and limit my market than be less clear in the advert and end up wasting other peoples time, and my own time.
I've now removed the link to the refurb pics, and posted up some nice shots of the car in the country
There will be someone out there that looks at what I've done, the time I've spent on the car, the price and the mileage, and appreciates that. It's a bargain!

Z3M Roadster
As the new owner of Ian's M Roadster I have to endorse his comments regarding the advertising and use of illustrations of his exceptional work on the car. It is now undoubtedly a very well sorted example and a credit to his skill and attention to detail.
After owning 2 previous "M" Roadsters I was looking for a good example with relatively low mileage . The bonus with Ian's car is that I have the documented and detailed breakdown of all the work carried out. The car now handles superbly with minimal roll and is a pleasure to drive.
Good luck with the search for the Z4M Ian !!
