New Z3 Owner. Couple of issues

Post by uggers2k »

Hi all,

Have joined the BMW Z3 club after purchasing a 1.9 2000 Z3 in Topaz blue with 49K.

I have owned the car for 6 weeks now and just took it on a 300 mile ride.

Am loving the car except having a few issues:

The gear change is not as smooth as it should be. It feels kind of stiff and notchy. Is this common on a Z3? Any possible improvements?

Also, the revs seem to be a little low on initial startup. Once the car is warm, and at traffic lights, it sometimes seems to be idling too high (Around 15K RPM). Again is this a common problem. Have read that the cam sensor could be faulty.

Any information required to sort the 2 above issues out would be grateful.

Cheers all

Hi and welcome, :D

The gearbox on most Z3's is what can only be described as notchy what I call a "mans gearbox" so I doubt there is any problem with yours.

With regard to your idling problem if it doesn't cut out when started or has a sudden misfire/hesitation when accelerating then I doubt it is yous cam sensors. What I suspect is you have a split air intake hose where it locates onto the throttle body usually the little pipe that branches off to the idle control valve. This allows the engine to suck in unmetered air making the engine run lean at idle and upping the revs a bit. A new one from BMW is around a tenner so not too expensive.

Cheers Aceman,

Will check the air intake hose later on. Hopefully a cheap fix.

Also check that your dipstick is pressed firmly down to seal the hole it goes into, mine runs a bit lumpy on tickover if I leave the dipstick up a fraction.

I have checked all pipes and they seem Ok except the one highlighted in the picture. It is split. Anyone know what this pipe is called, so I can get a replacement?

Thanks

Hi uggers2k

At first I thought this was some form of conduit covering electrical cables but then spotted this pic on my search.

From the pic above I believe that the part you are looking for is part 9, see below. If you click on item 9 it will take you to the part number.

I am not that familiar with the M43 engine, can someone else can confirm this?
