As it appears I am the senior member are there any benefits like free parking if I come back to the UK? Yes most cars were black and I had the pleasure? of owning a black Y type ford. In those days there were no compulsory crash helmets, speed limits or drink and drive restrictions. Oh where has all the freedom gone.

A black Y type - Oh the memories.
The first vehicle I ever drove was a black 1938 Morris 8 (I think). It was 1967 at the time and the senior science teacher brought it in to give us 6th formers a great fun filled afternoon. Now, can you imagine that happening these days? He'd be sacked and lose his pension, be ruined.
But the first car I ever owned: a 1953 Ford Prefect 'sit up and beg' type. It cost me £7 10s - I've still got the bill somewhere. God, it was my pride and joy - and I thought I was going to be the apple of all the girls eyes. Some thought...

....and petrol cost 4/6p (thats 4 shillings and 6 old pence) per gallon. I can remember thinking: 'Blimey, thats a bit steep'. I could try and work it out per litre at todays prices..... but I've lost my abacus!

Can I join Franco,I was also born in March 1939.
Still enjoy driving my 2.0.Ran away from home for 3 days earlier this month to have a blast round the Highlands,up as far as Kyle of Lochalsh. Total mileage 1,036 at 30.15mpg. Came all the way down from Inverness with the hood down
Sneaked through Cheshire without seeing the "Martian"

Back in 1971 I was in the RAF. My pride and joy was a Mk1 Cortina GT. In those days I used to go the garage and ask for "a quids worth" - and got about 3.5 gallons!
By the way, it wasn't self-service in those days. Instead a man came around and did the filling - you could also ask for a quick windscreen clean - free of course. It was called 'service'.

With the big event of hitting 50 this year this age banter is very close to my heart!!

My first car was a datsun coupe which I bought on a whim, drove it home and it never turned a wheel again - a lesson for the future lol

First real car was a vauxhall chevette hatch, but most of my early driving years were dull family models driven by the need for practicality, kids, dogs cost of insurance etc

Since then I've done a bit of a bengamin Button( think that's his name - the movie ?) where my tastes have been in reverse - went on to BMW 5 series, then to a e46 3 series convertible, a lovely z4 then a couple of MR2s and
now the Z3.

So at this rate I will be driving an Atom by 60, and who knows what by 70. .....if I'm spared that long, bring it on.

Ps I didn't get any speeding tickets until I was 47!!! Then I got two in six months.......blame the Z4 lol

Talking of speeding tickets - I had none for many, many years, then went abroad for ten years and came back in 1993 with a brand new Renault 5 Turbo (left hand drive and calibrated in kilometres of course). Within 3 moths I had twelve points - and fastest I'd done was 47 mph - on a dual carriageway! The magistrate suggested I get rid of the car as the Police deliberately chase certain cars.
I think it was about then my loathing of the Police started...

Is that my wheels you mentioned. If so, they're from a Z4. It chose them because I wanted wheels which looked 'technical' and had to be easy to clean - and these are - plenty of room for the brush and very easy to wipe over with a cloth and wheel wax. Very shiny in the summer.

First car - 1974 Mini Clubman in blue and rust. I bought it in 1982. Fun to drive around the country lanes. Pity the body work did not like our British climate.
If you can drive a Mini whilst wearing wellies and still smile, then that's a good car in my book!
