Free Fix for Constant Pressure Valve

Postby soma » Sun 06 Nov, 2011 12:39

HI All,
I am offering to post to the UK:
1. Viton Fluoroelastomer O-rings (23 high-temperature compound o-rings)
2. My custom-made 3mm x 4mm Kincrome impact drill bit
FREE OF CHARGE!!!
to anyone who wants to fix their constant pressure valve oil leak

All you have to do is do the same for a fellow forum member. Once you are finished with it, pass it on to the next bloke again and again until the 23-O-rings are used up.

I have been inspired by Pingu's excellent write up on how to fix the leaking constant pressure valve (thanks Pingu!!):
http://www.zroadster.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31401
In order to remedy this issue, Pingu gave instructions on how to machine grind an impact drill bit, the most time consuming part of this do-it-yourself job. In addition, replacing the OEM O-ring with another has proven to be only a short term solution as high oil temperatures adversely affect the rubber compound. Therefore, I have followed the recommendations from bimmerforum to use Viton Fluoroelastomer o-rings (1.5mm wide/14.5mmID):
http://www.mcmaster.com/#viton-fluoroel ... gs/=etco9u

I have 23 O-rings and my custom-made flat-head bit ready to go:

If you would like to do this job, I would be happy to send you the tool and o-rings as long as you pass it on the next forum member.

Just PM your address and I will post it straight away
cheers, SOMA:D

Thanks again Pingu for a great write up.
After ordering the minimum number of o-rings, I still have heaps left over and the tool is 'job specific' so might as well pass it on. :)
I reckon if anyone is getting ready to do an oil change, might as well replace the constant pressure valve o-ring adding only an hour or so to the job.
I don't think M owners realize that the OEM O-ring becomes harden and brittle rendering it ineffective at maintaining oil pressure. I agree with Pingu this may constribute to vanos failure.

It's a 15 minute job when the car is already on the ramp and you have the tool.

I'd get it negotiated in with the price of the service. :D .

Only 15 minutes....all the more the reason to get this sorted if you have a leak...surprised I've only had one offer so far.
I suppose the Northern Hemisphere is getting a tad chilly this time of year for working under cars eh?

Great offer.

Could anyone of you please send me just one of these Viton O-rings? I think I can grind the tool quickly myself but I'm really interested in one of these rings.

Who would ship one to germany?

I torqued it down to something between 20 and 25nm. 20nm were no problem with a standard bit but just below 25nm the bit started to bend the slotted head of the valve.

Something between 25-28nm is just right.

Keep in mind to manufacture a special tool.

Just a heads up, the seals & tool are on there way to 'althulas' so direct any requests onto him. Thanks again for this Soma, very kind of you to do this especially for free...

I got mine done today along side my inspection I and diff and gearbox oil change. There was a small leak from CPV and the o ring was solid like plastic. I believe Sonic is next in line PM sent.

Thanks again Soma my indie was impressed with your generosity and Pingu write up.

Update kit sent out to Sonic 28.03.12, I believe Swamper is next in line after Sonic

HI Sonic,
I hope everything is going well with the tool and rings. Have they been forwarded on to the next person in line? There is a gentleman over at Z3Mcoupe.com who lives in Ireland who would like to get a hold of a ring. I told him to have a look at this thread and make a request.
Keep those ring replacements going!!!

Info for when the free ones run out:

I have just got some o-rings for my Escort's FIP and they supplied next day for £1.50.

The o-ring for the constant pressure valve is 14.5mmID and 1.5mm cross-section

http://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p513108/1.5mm+Section+14.5mm+Bore+VITON+Rubber+O-Rings/product_info.html

There is a minimum order quantity of 2 and that will cost you £5.70, but 10 will only cost £6.95.
