Well it is here, and boy is it quick!

Loving the look of the new site, and it sill has it's old familiar feel. Well done RobertT and everyone else involved.

I though this was going to take 24 hours or something! I think everyone else did too as there is almost no one else on!!!! In fact should I be here or have I sneaked on early?? :pc

DNS changes can take 24-48 hours to fully propagate according to my ISP. My own broadband provider was somewhat slower than a lot of people's - I could see people trying to get on after a couple of hours - mine finally updated after about 4. It all depends on what how long the servers cache things for - this can be 24 hours or more - so a few people may still be looking at the holding page on the old server.

Glad you like the look of the new site and I hope I have managed to preserve as much as possible from the old one.

Cheers R.

Great new look to the site.......BUT the rolling screen is too fast to distinguish between the topic title and the postee......its all a blur :squeeze: ....can the topic title be enlarged into a larger font?

Thanks for keeping a great site going.

I'm planning on taking a look at this later today. I can control both speed and style, so hopefully I can make it a little easier to read and hit.

I always found the scroling posts were very difficult to hit when accessing on the mobile. Seems easier now. Can you remove the links to profiles under each post? I cant count the number of times I have tried to hit a post and instead hit the profile of the OP. Dont see a need for the hyperlink to be there.

I notice that my V8 post has now lost most of the photos. Will I have to go through and edit all the links to Flickr etc?

Deano, the links in your V8 conversion thread appear to have been made using HTML rather than BBCode. HTML is not supported in phpBB 3 as it is considered a security risk. The tags just need converting to BBCode to make them work.

Code: Select all

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/xxx/yyy/" title="text"><img src="http://farm5.static.flickr.com/xxx/yyy_zzz.jpg" width="500" height="375" alt="text" /></a>
Need to become:

Code: Select all

[url=http://www.flickr.com/photos/xxx/yyy/][img]http://farm5.static.flickr.com/xxx/yyy_zzz.jpg[/img][/url]
It will probably be easier to login to Flickr and copy and paste the BBCode.

There is no easy way for me to automate this for you either, sorry.

Another minor change to the home/portal page - the link to new posts now displays the number of new posts in brackets - this is something the old site did, which I thought was useful.

I didn't see anything wrong with the old server/site & the way it looked. I thought it looked great.
Just wondering why the switch ?

Robin, I really hope you are jesting with me! With an ISP that has had two hosting outages in recent weeks, a server that ancient versions of software on it, and a version of phpBB that is so far out of date that it no longer receives updates or security fixes, the server and hosting provider just had to change. We now have far more control over everything, so hopefully I can keep it up to date. The new version of phpBB will also allow us to support add-ons such as Tapatalk and provides very much better features for moderating and managing large numbers of users.

Style is a very subjective thing, and I can understand that not everyone will like the new look, but the style we are now running offers much better presentation than the updated version of the old one - take a look at the User Control Panel - this is much better broken down into sections and things like PMs are far far better presented. Yes, it will take some getting used to, but I for one like it a lot.

I will be tweaking a few things as we go along - I will shortly be making a small update to the memberlist to show which column is being used for the sorting and in which direction.

Not Jesting Robert.
Just asking a question. Now answered. Much appreciated.
I now understand the need to update.
Will be much more robust among other things.
Job well done thanks.

Site seems good + fast, however, the scrolling new topics seems to be powered by a Z3M ! Too fast! Can it be slowed down slightly? I'm sure it wasn't that fast before the upgrade.

I had to change the scroller to support pesky Internet Explorer in the new layout, so the speed is not quite the same, however I did also change the way that the scroller is paused - previously it only stopped when you put the mouse over a link - now it stops when the mouse is anywhere over the scroller, which should make it easier to hit the links. I used to find the old one a bit too slow, but I can ease this one back a little if the consensus is that it is too fast.
