removing body parts and rivets

Postby ramon » Mon 02 Jan, 2012 15:19

Hi all and happy new year,
To start the year I have decided to remove all the body parts and resoray them, some of the parts are easy to remove but there are some difficult ones. I have some questions to the experts:
1- Triying to remove the rear panel there are 10 expansion rivets that I can not pull out the plug without breaking the plug or the rivet it self, is there a method to do this?
2- There are a lot of expansion rivets of different sizes, where can I find them?
3- Where can I find the clips that hold the parts together?
4- Are there clues to reinstal the parts? like order, etc...

Thank you in advance

I was thinking the same yesterday, my side panels, doors and rear bumper could do with some TLC, I might even cover them in Clear 3M Vinyl as additional protection this time.
I had a similar problem with the Rivets 2 years ago, I think they were simply brittle from age, ordered a new set and clips from BMW, its not something that gets changed often so I imagine they are still available. Apparently there is a panel order, someone like Ivor, Felix or Senna will know.
If you do figure it out, let us know as this question pops up occaisionally.

Good luck.

To access the door panel you need to remove 1st the rear wing then the sill panels. There's not much left after that so I would think it becomes obvious.

Oop's just reread the original post - you've probably got this far already.

a similar question.

I have several small stone chips and a scratch on the nose cone of the car. A very good local paint specialist can re paint and ensure the metallic black finish blends perfectly. Ideally they would like the nose panel removed from the car.

so... having looked at the workshop manual it seems you need to remove the under tray and the front wings, to remove the front wings, I must remove the lower side panels, which means the rear wings also have to come off. True / false?

If true the panel stays on the car as I can live with the stone chips and will touch them in manually !

note to self. Silverstone is rapidly approaching so charge and reconnect the battery, dig the car out from the back of the garage, book it in for an MOT, arrange insurance and tax it. By which time it may have stopped raining.

Tony,

Last year whilst Ivor was rebuilding the green Z1 and preparing panels for paint. I deciced to replace both door belts and whilst the lower panels were off, it seemed right to have the nose cone and panels in for paint at the same time. On my car the removal of the nose cone entailed the underpanel and the rubber strip being removed and from memory the nose cone fixings are all accessible without the front wing removal. I am sure that Ivor will come along soon and confirm that the front wings do not need to be removed. However without him being present when I did the job, I would still be trying to figure out some of the fixings! I do have photographic evidence of a Z1 with no nose cone but sporting a fine set of front wings. On my car the kidney grilles and the two air grilles in the nose cone caused the most problems, due to fatigue in the plastic fixings. Purchasing new kidney grilles highlighted a change of design, but was easily sorted with a 3mm drill bit and a blop of two pack epoxy.

Hope this helps you make the decision.

Thanks Guys,

Useful feedback. It's now a question of timing ... post Silverstone would be easier.

Correction: remove front undertray, Indicator lenses, 6 expanding rivets, 3 torx bolts under rubber strip, 1x 10mm bolt in wheel well either side behind guard, slide bumper forwards. With a fully stocked garage such as yours, 1 hour max.

Its been 2 years in waiting and finally replaced my passenger door skin, had the front bumper off, side panels off, greased up the door runners whilst down there. Now the rear bumper, which seems a bit loose, anyone know how that comes off?

Thats correct the bumper can be removed without removing the wings. Jet you have forgotten those annoying little clips which hold the wing and bumper together at the edge of thw wheel arch.

I didnt forget, just didnt want to admit I couldnt get those awkward buggers on
I will either grow some muscle or postpone it for another 2 years, but I did put 2 clips under each light after our chat and it is much improved.

Merci Monsieur

(OT)

Jet, if you go with the 3M vinyl protection on the doors, will you post how you get on with that?
When I was bidding on a Z1 recently, I was wondering about doing that so that I could drive with the doors down, without worrying about scratching the paint. The steer I got was that the film would 'probably' look awful really quickly, because it would scratch instead of the paint, but I reckoned it was still worth a go.

(And although I couldn't agree terms on that car, it seems like the Z1 itch is still there for me. Talk me out of it, please...)

TG, welcome,

I was given the same advice, it also changes colour apparently, so decided against it. I would like to use it on the side panels as they are out of the line of sight and get mullered. Its worth Looking into what caused the scratches, FinerZ1 had it pretty bad, turns out it was a switch problem if I remember correctly.

There is no getting away from it once you get infected..... Are you coming to the ZedFest? Be warned, these events tend to make the addiction worse.

PS: TG is famously known as 'Torture Garden' based in south London, any affiliation? :-)

Thanks , Jet. Not sure yet, but you might be right about the Z. My wallet is howling in pain already...

Re. Zedfest, if that's the meet 21/7, no, like Racing Tortoise I'll be on holiday. And, yes, like him, I...wasn't completely in control of the choice of date... :? But, thanks for the warning. Maybe it's for the best.

And, no, my 'tg' goes back to long before the torture garden was founded, or anything else much like that. (Probably. If I even knew. Which I don't. Obviously. ;) ) It was just the design prefix for the f1 team I follow, under its original name. ('Senna' might know what I'm talking about. Or he might not.) Just a homemade, zero-budget F1 car with a homemade, zero-budget turbo engine. Oh, and few if any of the staff had any F1 experience, including the technical director. But 30 years ago I knew what they'd done in F2, and I had an idea they might make the big time. Since then...it's been a bumpy ride. But 4xWDCs and 3xWCCs later, I'm still following them.

That's the one Jet.

Or Toleman, Benetton or Renault if you prefer.

We have a bit more F1 experience these days and a decent budget but I like to think we're still punching above our weight (nice to have McLaren and Merc behind us in the constructors)

Andy,

got talking to a fellow Z1 forum member who happens to work for FI, was asking about our 2009 tour and who was `da man` that organised the FI visit.

Gave you a glowing reference matey, you might meet him at Zedfest.
