ENGINE MODULE

From the dialog select Engine and then the option appropriate to your car. The DME 5.2 for M44 script relates to my car and the results are presented below.

Image

The menu screen will be shown:

Image

Pressing F2 shows the Engine Ident screen:

Image

The part number 1438877 relates to the DME Basic Control Unit, full part number 61.35.1.438.877.

Pressning F3 shows the Engine Code screen:

The actual VIN-number of the vehicle is shown along with some other details from the DME.

Pressing F4 shows the Engine Error Menu screen:

Pressing F1 reads the error codes and shows the Engine Error Report screen:

Image

As you can see I have two errors, both relating to a misfire. The first error is a summary error, the second a specific error relating to cylinder 3. The additional information shows that this occured at idle when starting from cold.

Pressing F2 should clear the error codes.

Pressing F7 clears Adaptations:

Image

Press F10 to return to the Engine menu.

ASC MODULE

From the dialog select Chassis and then the option appropriate to you car. I chose ASC Mk20 / DSC E46.

Image

The following menu is displayed:

Image

Pressing F2 shows the ASC Ident screen:

Image

The part number 1164896 relates to the ASC Unit, full part number 34.51.1.164.896, interestingly not the control unit, which ends 897.

Pressing F4 shows the ASC Error screen:

Image

Pressing F2 should clear any errors. Press F10 to return to the ASC menu.

Presssing F5 shows the ASC Status screen:

Image

With the car on jacks, rotatating the wheel by hand should give a reading. With the car driving in a straight line, the rotation sensors should all read the same. If one of the sensors is giving duff readings, it may well show up here. Depressing the brake pedal should toggle the state of Brake lights switch. Pressing the ASC switch should toggle ASC program.

Pressing F6 shows the ASC Activate menu:

Image

Press F10 to return to the ASC menu.

AIRBAG MODULE

From the dialog select Body and then Airbag.

Image

The following menu is displayed:

Image

Pressing F2 shows the Airbag Ident screen:

Image

The part number 8374798 relates to the Airbag Control Module, full part number 65.77.8.374.798, which according to BMW Fans, was not fitted beyond September '98, but seems to have been fitted to my January '99 built zed. The unit was manufactured in week 38 '98, which would have been September '98, but was not coded until January when my car left the production line.

Pressing F3 shows the Airbag Code screen:

Image

This correctly indicates that my car has no seat occupancy sensor, that I have a drivers airbag, but not a passenger, I have seatbelt pre-tensioners both sides, and as is normal with the Z3, I have no searbelt buckle switches (on other BMW models these control the display of the seatbelt telltale).

Pressing F4 shows the Airbag Error screen:

Image

So all good there.

If there were any errors, pressing F2 from this screen will clear them.

Press F10 to return the airbag menu.

Pressing F5 shows the Airbag Status screen:

Image

This looks like there are two separate checks for ground and supply, which will be what bring the airbag light on when you have a dodgy seat connector and move the seat.

Image

Pressing F2 shows the EWS Ident screen:

Image

The part number 4101593 relates to the EWS Control Unit, full part number 61.35.4.101.593. It is listed as Control unit EWS III-D, but does not appear to be listed on the appropriate page for my car.

Image

Pressing F3 shows the EWS Code screen:

Image

Pressing F4 shows the EWS Error menu:

Image

--

Pressing F1 reads the error menu and shows the EWS Error Report:

From here you can use F1, F2, F4 and F5 to set specific ADC values for each of the gauges. F8 sets a specific speed signal value in km/h. These values stay in place until you return to the Instrument cluster main menu (press F10 twice).
