Z Tour in Pyrenees (France) - 25-26 May 2013 - NOW REGISTER

Post by F.Brossaud »

HI,

With our kid, our move to the south of France and a new job, I hardly had time in the last few years to connect to the forum  ...
Z is in the garage and I need to drive it !

In few words,
After Z tour in Loire Valley in 2008,
After Ztour in Quercy in 2009,

I propose a Z tour in Pyrenees and Cathar country in 2013 !
date is not yet finalized but it should take place between beginning of May and mi-June, during 2 days, with "all included" formula like inthe past

It will take place between National Regional Park of the Ariegeois Pyrenees and Cathar country. Zip code for that area is 09000 (Foix)
Some more information about that area :
http://www.ariege-pyrenees-tourism.co.u ... enees.aspx

Here are few pictures of areas and villages where we should go :

Mirepoix old village, where there is a big british community, there are even shops fully dedicated to british people

Good roads in the Park :

Queribus castle :

Please let me know if you are interested so that I can go further in the organisation
Date should be finalized during this summer, it will mostly depend on you

Great, I will keep you posted in the next few weeks.

Even if the tour take place during one day and half, there are many interesting other sites to visit in the area like :
- Cité de Carcassonne http://www.carcassonne.culture.fr/
- Grotte du Mas d'Azil http://www.grotte-masdazil.com/-Grotte- ... Azil-.html
- Abbaye de Fontfroide http://www.fontfroide.com/

We could arrange something the day after the meeting if you like

Hey Fred,

It is good to hear from you and good to see that you are thinking of your Z1 again :D

We thoroughly enjoyed your tours of the Loire and also the Dordogne, so would be very interested in this new one you propose. I know that I cannot make the early part of May and also will for sure be going to the Le Mans 24 hours, which is likely to be the second weekend in June, but in between those two I would be almost certain to be 'up for it'

I am sure that I can sell it to some more UK Z1'ers too.

Many thanks for thinking of organsising another tour. I can only imagine the amount of work it takes.

Best wishes.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Bonjour Frederick

Please put this Z1'er down as interested x2 people.

One question: The Z1 has a very small boot If we tag on a few extra days on our own possibly (1 weeks holiday in total) how do you pack for a week in a Z1? Do you lose the spare wheel and take some tyre weld cans? as I would like to go top down as much as possible I ask this not for myself, but my wife she packs far to much :head: :head: :head: How do others with Z1's cope? apart from leave the wife at home

Bonsoir,

Great to have one more Z1
My spare wheel has been in storage for 14 years now, no way to fill the boot with that thing that I will need once every twenty years ! I have some "repair cans" in the small storage box on the left side.

In fact, you should cope with this issue on both ends: opimize space available on the boot and minimize space used by your wife. Give her few soft bags and tell her "that's your allocation"

Dear Fred,

Fantastic! We will b there (x2). I agree with GG re the baggage in the Z1, but there we are. At this moment, I'm thinking of a tour running from Wednesday to Wednesday or something along those lines as we spoilt the Dordogne one last year by trying to get down there and back too quickly.

We left you all south of Souillac and stopped in Tours for the night, where we left at 6:00 AM the next morning and were home for 2:00 PM on Monday ! Too far and too fast. This time, I think something altogether more relaxed is in order.

That weekend works for us, so brilliant. Let me know when you need money and we can sort it out.

Thanks again Frederic. I am looking forward to it already!
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Even though I have not met any of you yet, the wife and me would be interested and with the time of the year could tie it in to the trip to Le Mans. If it does not tie in with Le Mans we would travel down from Yorkshire in case anybody else would be doing the same.

Hi
Yes could be interested & will watch for updates.
However all depends on our first trip down to Royan in a couple of weeks time and how that goes, as must make sure the better half enjoys herself.Might have to let her have a drive if I dare.
Have just picked up a sat nav(and de activated the speed camera warnings) so that should stop the usual "discussions" over why we seem to be going the wrong way!!!
Any other tips from regular French vistors for a relaxed journey?
Thanks

Yes - watch your speed!

The black beetles are a lot more cunning than plod over here - they carry guns and they can impound your car.

Watch in particular the 70kmh limit in villages and built up areas. Enjoy France - it is a beautiful country to drive in.

Hello,

Yes, be very careful with cops during your trip in France, they have high targets from their Chiefs and Government is desperately seeking for money everywhere, so ... they will be delighted to grab you money

For those who might be interested, Hotel where we'll stay on Saturday agrees to apply you the same preferred rate on friday evening and sunday evening.
So, if you plan to arrive one day before and/or leave one day after, let me know in PM ; I will give you more details.
Meeting point saturday morning will be about 25 min driving from this hotel.

Within 1 month, agenda for this meeting should be finalized with registration document. One more restaurant to try :D

Sorry to miss out on the Pyrenees, as I'll be in north-east France that weekend (sadly without the Z1.
For those who haven't driven in France before, it's a joy, with well-surfaced roads and seldom much traffic.
Further to Sam's comment about speed limits, there is usually no specific signed limit at the entrance to a town; the town name sign marks the start of a 50km/h limit (31mph). At the other end, the town name with a red bar through it shows the end of the limit.
The limit on single carriageways is 90km/h (56mph), which, given the excellent state of many roads, feels surprisingly slow, so watch out.
People really do stick to motorway speed limits. Last week I drove in a hire car from Lyon to Metz. With the cruise control set to 130km/h on my sat nav (134 on the car's speedo), only the occasional Audi overtook me. I've heard that the degree of tolerance given by the police is 5%, rather than 10% in the UK, so perhaps that is why.
On the other hand, general driving standards in France have improved enormously in the past 30 years. The greater feeling of confidence in other drivers by far compensates for the need to watch your speed.
Concerning speed camera warnings on satnavs, Tomtom has reached an agreement with the French ministry of transport which effectively allows the satnav to warn of dangerous locations. Since cameras are allegedly only placed in locations were there's a history of accidents, it's no surprise to find a camera after a danger warning. Neat, eh! It also warns of railway crossings and other hazards. Probably, other satnav manufacturers have come to similar arrangements. If you have updated your satnav in the past few months, it should switch automatically from camera warning to danger warning when you enter France.

I was thinking about a run around the Pyrennees and Northern Spain for 2013 so to meet up with fellow Z owners would be brilliant so put me down as an interested party. I have done several, wonderful 2 to 3 week trips in the Z venturing into France, Italy and Switzerland in the past. It is a fantastic packing exercise for the wife.( how many pairs of shoes can you get in the boot and under the seat)

Hi ,

Schedule is about to be finalized, I tasted one more restaurant today
 Due to restaurant capacity (impossible to find nice and big one) it will not be possible to accept more than 40 persons during this tour.

Registration document for this tour with final agenda will be ready in the middle of november.
If you need any support to organize your trip to France, feel free to let me know.

Im jealous. this sounds like a great idea. Unfortunately it is bang in the middle of our high season so cannot make it. However, if anyone doing the long crossing Cherbourg or St Malo and travelling down the westcoast of France to the Pyrenees, come and look us up in LA GACILLY where we run day boats on the river. You will be more than welcome. Check out www.day-boats.com for details. We can also put a few up in our house as long as some real UK ales are brought along !!
