Keeping a z1 on the road

Post by DrSasha »

Hi guys,
To me, seeing an iconic car die slowly due to an accident is sad.

1 owner, low mileage. Front collision.
Not beyond strut towers.
To make story short, it needs a hood, bumper and bumper support, radiator, headlight.

Also front body repair- the two longitudinal members are twisted.
Otherwise- perfect, not less.

Would you touch such a car?
Are these parts possible to source? In green hopefully?
How much would you pay compared to a mint one?

Best bet is finding a rear ended z1 and use the front eh....

Please let me hear your thoughts.
Am I crazy to even consider a damaged car?
Keep in mind I can't import a whole z1 for another 10 years, and that there are only three in the country.

What is the approximate cost of purchase+labour+parts to Market value?

Ivor has successfully restored 2 similar cars, acquiring parts from various sources, so the used parts market is fairly good, plus the Germans have developed carbon fibre body parts if all else fails.

Any chance of some pictures?

Very tenacious our Mad Scientist Ivor, never seen anyone so determined, no challenge too difficult. I guess with those 2 qualities nothing is impossible. He will inevitably read this and respond shortly, also drop him a PM, *A1Z1* he should get an email prompt and reply.

Post some pics, dont worry about how it looks, we have seen much much worse. Only 3 Z1s in Israel, including this one? How did it happen?

Sad story really.
Owned by a fellow who never even let other sit in the light leather seats.
One day, somehow, someone convinced him to give him a drive after chasing him on the streets.

Wall... No insurance.... Epic fail...

At least that's what I heard from different people.

Here you'll find before and after pics.
In reality after stripping hood and bumper, not as scary.

He asks for 40k $....
Too much by any standard.... With damaged chassis....

But again, how much would you pay?

Americans dollards??? 40K... that must be around 25K£!!!

Well, that's a lot of money for a damaged car!

I would guess 40 usd is the correct value for a complete car...

$40k damaged or complete, thats disheartening.
How is it you cant import it for another 10years, yet there are 3 in the country? How do the import laws work, is it like the US, show and shine rules?

A car can be imported new or up to two year old.
After that, only as collectible, when it reaches 30 years old :-(

I was thinking labour costs.
Base your parts repair on new part prices, as sometimes there is not much difference between new and used parts, then you have a ceiling figure. You can get prices from Realoem or BMWFANS, unless someone has these for sale. Wheels are an oddity, one minute nothing, then next minute 3 sets on eBay for cheap money. I saw a bumper and front wing on ebay.de, have you asked the guys on Z1Z1.de? Alot of stuff gets advertised on there.

Hi DrSasha,
Everything is repairable its all down to how much money time and effort you want to put into it.

I was lucky with the 1st car i repaired and came across a new old stock chassis/shell this took care of making everything true and was about the same price as i paid for the second car to be jigged.

Replacing the chassis/shell was something that i was able to carry out at home with no other assistance where as the jigging had to be carried out at a bodywork shop. Are you planning on doing the work yourself.

As jet has said ebay.de is a good source of parts and prices.

Thanks for the reply guys!

So, add a windscreen to the list and a rear left tail light.

How much would you pay knowing the work involved for the car above.
Percentage versus an immaculate example?

Well, the wreck of my first Z1, which looked like this (probably worse than the one you are looking at) before Ivor lovingly repaired it, was valued at about £4k by the insurance company (compared to £20k for the same car in undamaged condition) so $40k sounds steep no matter how many there are or are not in the country. Frankly it should logically be worth $40k less the cost of repairs.

RT

Am I correct in assuming Ivor also needed to recover the drivers seat ?!

You were lucky not to be seriously injured

Ah yes, the colour of adrenaline is brown...

Reminds me of a joke...

Long ago, when sailing ships ruled the sea, a captain and his crew were always in danger of being boarded by pirates from a pirate ship.

One day while they were sailing, they saw that a pirate ship had sent a boarding party to try and board their ship. The crew became worried, but the Captain was calm.

He bellowed to his First Mate, "Bring me my red shirt!"

The First Mate quickly got the Captain's red shirt, which the captain put on. Then he led his crew into battle against the mean pirates. Although there were some casualties among the crew, the pirates were defeated.

Later that day, the lookout screamed that there were two pirate vessels sending two boarding parties towards their ship. The crew was nervous, but the Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, "Bring me my red shirt!" And once again the battle was on!

The Captain and his crew fought off the boarding parties, though this time more casualties occurred.

Weary from the battles, the men sat around on deck that night recounting the day's events when an ensign looked at the Captain and asked, "Sir, why did you call for your red shirt before the battle?"

The Captain, giving the ensign a look that only a captain can give, explained, "If I am wounded in battle, the red shirt does not show the blood, so you men will continue to fight unafraid." The men sat in silence. They were amazed at the courage of such a man.

As dawn came the next morning, the lookout screamed that there were pirate ships, 10 of them, all with boarding parties on their way. The men became silent and looked to the Captain, their leader, for his usual command.

The Captain, calm as ever, bellowed, 'Bring me my brown trousers!!!'
