Service Schedules.

Post by TJS »

I have recently had a couple of interesting conversations with BMW main dealers in respect of what they belive should be included in Z1 Oil, Inspection I and Inspection II services and the associated costs. Some insist water pumps and followers should be replaced as part of a cam belt service, others belive the ignition is electronic and the distributor cap and rotor arm are "sealed for life" items. Understandably, fixed price "menu" servicing is not available and several dealers were unaware of the need to remove the under trays to gain access to certain parts.

I will need a full Inspection II service and cam belt, the latter defined by time elapsed rather than mileage. How often do people replace the cooolant/ anti freeze mix ? I am thinking of trying the new generation of "waterless coolants" see http://www.evanscoolants.co.uk/ but I am not sure a BMW dealer will do this.

I have put together the following schedule ... comments welcome.

Hi,

I used to replace coolant every 2/3 years, sometimes 4 but not more so you prevent any clogged circuit. I have never heard about this "new generation stuff" before.

I would also change the water pump while you are doing the timing belt, it's just 3 more nuts to remove and sometimes the bearings doe not like when car stay without running for a long time.

Don't forget brake fluid replacement, also every 2 or 3 years. I remember having seen once a Z1 "full maintained" by BMW with "original" brake fluid like dark charcoil :head: "Check correct level" is not enough...

 One thing I would DEFINITIVELY add is fuel hoses replacement. I did it few months ago because I had a very little fuel leak in the engine ; hoses were really dried after 23 years... and in worst case, you could have risk of fire.
You can take the opportunity of changing the fuel filter to do it. It cost me arount 75 EUR of parts (need of special hoses to order due to specific radius)

Hi Tony

I Dont think you have missed much if anything in your schedules.

However as our cars get older the rubber hoses as Frederic points out will need replacing. I had all the coolant hoses on my car replaced some years ago they weren't leaking but I was advised to change them as a precaution. Also it was found on an inspection on my car recently that one of the flexible brake hoses was bulging under pressure! I've since had this replaced but should I take this as a sign to change them all? Maybe upgrade to braided hoses?

I don't know where one draws the line regards steering rubbers etc I guess on a needs basis.

The problem with rubber is it obviously ages over time and its difficult to know which part to replace next without costing yourself a fortune.

I have the coolant and brake fluid changed every 2 years and the cambelt done every 4 years. Not had the rubber doorbelt changed on the passengers side yet... but drivers one had been done just before I bought it :D

Thanks for the replies.

Good point regarding the rubber hoses, especially the fuel lines. I had this problem on the TVR Griffith recently; turned on the ignition, waited for the fuel pump to prime and then heard the sound of liquid splashing on the garage floor and smell of petrol. Quickly turned off the ignition and disconnected the battery. The rubber fuel hoses (2) from the engine bulkhead over the manifolds and into the injection system had perished, probably due to the incredible heat these cars create. The old hoses were very dry and brittle and were held in place with jubilee clips rather than proper hose clamps. Lack of space between engine and bulkhead meant a simple job was very time consuming. The car is 1999 compared to the 1991 Z1 so a good idea to change them on the BMW. New nitrile rubber fuel hose for modern fuels is readily available. Real OEM shows the Z1 BMW hoses as 8mm / 13mm. Advised by a TVR parts specialist not to use braided hoses ... better to stick with rubber as any future perishing is easier to spot. Any idea as to the length of the rubber fuel hoses on the Z1 ? http://www.flexiducting.co.uk/automotive_hoses_26.html

I will drain, flush and replace the engine coolant myself, I may remove the radiator and reverse flush with running water depending on how much rubbish and silt comes out on the first drain. Many older vehicles have replacement silicone water hose kits: are the water hoses Z1 specific or shared with the age compatible E36 LHD 3 series ? ACT ( well regarded for TVR parts) does a kit ... hopefully in black. http://www.actproducts.co.uk/shop/bmw-e ... p-480.html Good point re the water pump, lack of use tends to kill them and a road repair isn't possible.

Roll bar bushes and the rubber gaiters for the steering rack, and driveshafts were also recently replaced on the TVR simply down to age .. 10 years (30k mile) plus is probably the normal expected wear. Preventative replacement may be a good idea for the Z1, especially the steering rack. I have thought of upgrading the brake lines to steel braided items on the Z1 as the initial pedal feel and bite isnt great and I tend to quickly pump the pedal to get firm pressure.

Door belt servicing ... I have replaced the drivers side when it snapped. I doubt the passenger side has been touched. It isnt a job I would give to a BMW dealer to do.

I will refine my list and get quotes from a couple of BMW dealers. It will be interesting to see how they respond.

Wouldn't using a good specialist be a better bet? Last time I serviced my Z1 (just an oil/filter service), I had two options (i) take it to Park Lane's Classic Workshop in Battersea who are (relatively speaking) local, would do it for £200 and claimed familiarity or (ii) take it down to Munich Legends in East Sussex (a near-3hr round trip) who did it for £120ish IIRC. In the end I opted for the latter largely because I know ML know Z1s and I was scared of PL's labour rates in the event of them finding anything extra that needed doing.

Tony,

Interested in the results, looking through the dealer section of this site, not many recommendations within the M25 to choose from. Spoke to Stephen James about a belt change, they were the most competitive, they are also part of the BMWCC membership discount scheme. I may follow your advice and do the pump also.

I have upgraded to braided brake hoses, but not the fuel lines, will have to check that, do the lengths differ dependent on year of manufacture? Coolant hoses are also on my agenda this year, the main one costs around £130.

Oh well .. after much chasing of BMW dealers I finally got a response from the only dealer prepared to quote for an Inspection service and cam belt change on a Z1.

One dealer simply refused to quote as the car was " far too old to be serviced by BMW franchises"; BMW GB please take note ! Another dealer did eventually reply after being unable to trace the computerised service menus for a Z1. The "Technicans Check List" for the Inspection service provided as the basis for the quotation is based on the revised May 2004 service schedule. They are not allowed to use a customer specified service list as it compromises BMW Service Standards. So ...

Price ... £950, excluding any additional items required on inspection.

However, the service does include draining and refilling the automatic gearbox, replace the oil in the transfer box and front axle drive, empty the water traps (diesel models only), check the fluid level in the self leveling suspension, activate the service interval indicator ... and lubricate the door hinges.

So much for BMW "Service Standards" !

Just to give you an idea, I had an Inspection 2 service with cambelt on my Z1 in July by Ocean BMW and it cost me £402.40 (inc vat). The air filter wasn't replaced as I have a longlife K&N one fitted. Oil used was Castrol magnatec 10w40.

No ... both dealers were further north. One of them did however recommended a reasonably local independent BMW service specialist. Your earlier independent suggestion will be the fall back position (£600) but I would prefer to avoid a 250 mile round trip.

My last inspection and cam belt service (4 years ago) was £320 which is a good benchmark for your service last year. I was anticipating about £450. The irony is that the car is relatively simple to service (doors excluded !) so I can only assumed the main dealers shy away from it due to unfamililarity.

There seems to be two types of oil filter for the Z1.

A spin on canister and a paper element type which fits under a housing with an aluminium cover. Anyone know the change over point in terms of date or VIN number ?

Toni,
I am only aware of the spin on filter for the Z1 and would be interested to hear if there are any of the other type????
For servicing I would go to DMWorx at Stoke Mandeville. 01296 698086 Russell and Stewart. Russell was a BMW Master Tech and left the dealer network to do his own thing. Always been very good to me when there has been something outside the limited scope of what I can do. Quite local for us too!
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Thanks for the input and feedback.

Collected the car this evening from Tim Spicer an independent BMW Specialist in Duxford, Cambs. who carried out an Inspection 2 service plus cambelt and followers, new water pump, and battery. All fluids and filters (inc fuel filter) renewed except the gearbox oil. All parts were BMW supplied albeit the fuel filter and cambelt had to be sourced in Germany as there was no BMW UK stock. The brake pads were removed and cleaned and the inside of the wheels cleaned and polished plus all the under tray and wheel arch liner fittings and screws were replaced with new items as a matter of routine. Couple of advisory items, the rear exhaust manifold heat shield was in poor condition (holed), which supposedly is a common E30 problem ... you may want to check yours, plus the rear left hand brake shoes had slight cracking.

The car is on its 4th Cambelt after 36k kms and so the water pump was replaced as a precaution, BMW recommend replacing at alternate cambelt renewal. The new pump was silky smooth, the pump taken off the car certainly had bearing rumble. The distributor was removed, the cap and rotor arm inspected, cleaned and lubricated.

With 30 years of BMW experience Tim knew exactly what did and did nor need to be actioned which was a refreshing change from BMW dealers. Ok ... so no modern lounge with tea and coffee or pretty young service receptionists. The loan car was a 200k mile 5 series 528 Sport, W reg pre bangle (EXX?) which ran like a dream and the Z1 was valeted.
