Can this replace the M?

Idle chit-chat and banter. Let your hair down, but remember there are kids about!

Can this replace the M?

Post by chrisp_1 »

Maybe I'm asking to be slated but whats everyone think of this?

It's arguably the best early limited edition MkIII MX5 available and only 12000 miles - I'm tempted to offer him 6500 even though I know I shouldn't  (not worth much more than that is it?)

Go on,... Hit me up, opinions please :colourful:

I don't understand why you would go for that when for similar money you could get a 2.0 2.5 or 3.0 Z4 :? which will be miles better for build etc. For me personally when I looked at a 2.0 MX5 Sport Tech Coupe, it felt cheap and tiny so went for the E89

So does my Philips Sonicare Toothbrush

They handle OK, engine is breathless and needs revving its nuts off, interior is pretty placky and the boot is poor even against the Z3, sills and wings rust.

My dad has one on a 58 plate and likes it. My mum prefers my zed, but given the choice of roadster versus saloon/coupe, she'll go for a ride in either of the roadsters. :D

I had a '95 1.8 mark one mx5 a couple of years ago for about a year. Great wee car and fun to drive, but rust was starting to become an issue (rear arches and rear of sills). Good value for money but not in the same league as a Z3. With the Z3 you get much more for similar money and much better build quality and feels much more substantial, a better choice of engines and just as much fun. A no brainer really!

No thats the E46

I'm sounding negative towards the MX5 but I wouldn't have spent 23K on a new one when my E89 cost the same :D

 I was just having a read on Auto Trader for 20 mins and I come back to a thread full of banter,... what did I expect

Badman is right, they get top reviews and are considered a good car, I have owned the same model previously and that probably the best reason not to go back, especially when so many M's around to spend my insurance settlement :D

That said, a few other good points were made, engines are breathless true, traction control kicks in on every roundabout [annoying], plastics are poor, wheels corrode like hell,... do MKIII's rust aswell?. .

That said I still like them and 12k miles on Ltd edition car :head: :? If I can get it for £6.5 - £6.75k then it looks a reasonable proposition for a month or two?

I don't think an MX5 could replace the ///M

The ///M is extremely good value for money, bang for buck it's hard to beat, maybe a Caterham style or similar bike powered car ?

Those bike powered cars are  Can't see the golf clubs in either of those TBH and I don't want to keep the Modus, it's going when I get a replacement.

Agree with the VFM of //M's though buddy - I'm just trying to arrange to view one that's reasonably pretty local (here we go again)

As a recent owner of a z (not M but 2.8) I feel qualified to add comment.

I test drove before picking the Z another few equivalents all similar age and spec as I had no idea what I wanted at the time........including

MX5, MR2, MGF and even a Smart Roadster (which was awful)......

The Z by far was not the most responsive or indeed most refined and actually the most expensive of the bunch, buts it 'look' outshone the others........and even now when I pass a decent MX5 I still think they are lacking in the looks department. Which lets be honest when you look at the time and effort people on this forum put into their roadsters is what its all about !!!

Keep the Z.......or at least if you do get rid, can I have your turret covers and internal panels........Ha Ha :)

Cheers

I definitely can't see past the //M badge on either Z3 or Z4.

Not getting another //M is the hardest pill I'm trying very hard to swallow. Faced with being single and living back at Dads (homeless) and jobless in my home town I know its wiser to spend a little less on fuel etc ATM.

My insurance payout and shed-clearance have given me the £££'s to make him a reasonable offer, provided there are no VANOS, boot-weld, suspension or rust issues with the car.

I have noticed that M prices are LOW at the moment, unlike MX5's and 3-series convertibles which are priced sky high ATM as far as I can see. It must be because it's such a niche market and the fact there are a fair few M's advertised for sale ATM compared to normal.
