Recently purchased my 1.9i and mpg whoa!

Hiya everyone.

Ain't got any decent pics to put up of the car yet, the seller sold it filthy so my avatar is the only pic I have available at present. Anyhow, I picked up the car and I've only done about 50 miles since but it seems to be chewing the juice. Is this common?

You say chewing the juice have you filled up or just looking at the gauge
they are not that juicy, dependant on what you had before
the thrill of the drive outway the fuel consumption
And also being new your right foot can be a bit more excessive at first

is the temp gauge sitting in the middle when the car has been running for a wile .....if its not you will need a new thermostat asap..... running colder will eat up the fuel //

It’s not going to be as good as modern 2013 cars built with extreme economy in mind but should return at least 30 MPG unless you were driving in heavy stop/start traffic and “giving it a bit of welly” to test the new car. Also the fuel tank is small on the Z3 and so gives the impression of using a lot of petrol.

You should easily get early 30's to the gallon. As stated, the fuel gauge bears no relation whatsoever to the amount in the tank, so the only way to know is to calculate the mpg yourself.

Also, the comment about the thermostat is a good one - very common that they fail open which increases consumption.

Many thanks. This is good advice, also about the teeny tiny fuel tank.

Thrilled with the car otherwise. Much better than the MX5 alternative I tried. That just felt tinny.

i would expect 50 miles to cost me £10-£12 or so at todays fuel prices in my 1.9.

£10 gets my fuel gauge from empty to 1/2 tank, it then needs another £30+ to get it the second half. Once it drops below 1/2 i start looking for a petrol station!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

If you go by the fuel guage, mine does the first 50 miles on a tank using no fuel at all!

The only way you can acurately check mpg is to measure what you put in against how far it gets you. Brim the tank, reset the trip counter, drive, brim the tank again and note what you put in. This will give a rough figure. Repeat several times to get a more accurate one.

I usually get about 280 miles from tank of fuel, that equates to about £45 worth of fuel and about 35mpg or so. I would try using a higher grade fuel as well, Tesco Momentum or the like works well as the car seems to run better and mpg is improved also..

I'm used to the MPG on a 1.8 Vectra B tbh so maybe I just need more respect for a SPORTS car?
