Insurance

Post by S10OTY »

Hello all,

My brother in law is after a new m3 but can't find anyone to touch him for insurance for under 10k (he is 18) anyone on here know any good companies for young drivers with performance cars?

Thanks in advance

Hi!
I'm 22 but only passed my test a year ago and got my insurance for just over a grand for my 1.9 z3 from admiral which I thought was pretty good. I know its not the same car and im slightly older but might be worth a shot.

Oh thats a shame.
Not for you though like you said haha.
Ive only bought my car today and up until then I had a ford ka, because I thought it would be cheaper for the insurance. In the first year even that was £2800 but went down to a grandish at my recent renewal and the z3 is only £1 a month more expensive than the ford ka. So maybe if he buys something not as great just to tide him over for a year then can get the bmw at renewal.

Im sure thats not what he'd want to hear though haha.

When you say a NEW M3 do you mean a brand new E92 M3 which start at £55k to buy. I'd be surprised if anyone would even quote insurance for an 18 year old for such a vehicle.

If the "new" car he is after in fact an older E46 then maybe shopping around with specialist insurers could maybe produce a quote lower than 10k. I think unless someone on here has a particular company that you can try it will just be a matter of getting a list and trying them all until you hopefully get something better. Otherwise your brother-in-law will just have to face up to present day situation that a male driver of that age are just too high a risk for such a high performance vehicle. It used to be 25+ was the age that insurance got a bit cheaper.

I think he'll have to start a bit lower down the BMW performance ladder to get reasonable quote for insurance.

when i was 17 ( a good few years ago now ) and just in the army .. I had a BMW 2002tti ...fantastic car .it looked like a lada on steroids and was the first production car with fuel injection into the UK :?
my insurance for that was £75 a month for just third party......
so im sure the 18 today giong for a M3 . it will be funny money ......great advice being said here , get a lesser car for a few years and it wont be as painful :(

Im sorry but No 18 year old should be behind the wheel of a //M.. Hence insurance prices

He would be better off going for a modern diesel and consider remapping if he's a power junky..

Least insurance would be bearable

My insurance only got 'cheaper' when I turned 30... I think that's the cut off point IMO

If he can afford the car and insurance there is no problem.

The one thing I notice with my insurance is it's much easier (and cheaper) to insure old performance cars, 12yo+ preferably 15yo as they tend to go into specialist/enthusiast niche markets in terms of their owners and hence the liabilty rating fall for such vehicles over time, eg Alpina B3 rather than M3. Unfortuantely it's always gonna be hard to start with as you need the NCB to be built up for future savings so things like classic policies are no good in his situation for the longer term as they don't tend to accrue NCB at-all.

I'd definately reccomed 'more than' after my recent write-off of the Z3M, got full market value paid out within 2 weeks and only paid £200 premium (though I am 36yo with 9 years NCB)

We don't know his financial state, he might be able to afford the quote but he's looking for the best deal.

Anyone who looks at an m3 at that age has to have money or is daydreaming.

Why should an 18 year old not behind the wheel of an "m"?

I listened to Victoria Derbyshire on Five Live this morning on a discussion of a TV show tonight on BBC3 "Licence to Kill", it is quite clear why in general an 18 year old is not experienced enough to drive a M3. There is always the very odd expection at that age who is has the right mental attitude to drive it.
If a lad is financially capable of lashing out 10k for insurnance you can't stop him spending his money like that. You could question his maturity though of wanting to spend that sort of money just to run an M3 especially if it was just for an E46 M3.

because i span a rover metro at the age of 17, and two people in my school year were killed in separate crashes in standard cars due to driving like 17 year olds. A car like an M3 needs very respectful driving.

for sure there are sensible 18y/o drivers, but a disproportionate number of males that age don't know the boundaries. I know this because I know that at the time i believed i was an excellent driver, 10 yrs on looking back i was a :dunce:

Not my business what others buy, but i am personally very thankful that i didn't have one.

It's my opinion, and others too by the looks of things..

He or nobody else has to listen to them...

As long as he doesn't have an accident and hurt or kill anyone other than himself, then nobody cares. But the fact is that very few 18 year olds are mature enough to know not to use the full potential of an M3 on public roads. Money doesn't buy common sense.

only just had time to sit down and have a read,

he was looking at the e92 m3s, but insurance was daft around 20k! on the e46s it was around 7k still alot, if you can get insurance cheaper why waste money else where?

I was only asking too see if anyone knew of any good brookers to save him a few quid.

Ends up now that his dad has said he would kill him he if spent that sort of money on insurance and to wait till he is at least 21. so for the time being he has to stick to his vauxhall vivaro sportive van!

Thanks for the comments
