SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
The consensus is that Black is the way to go...
Now I need at least 20 buyers to be able to supply them at £.17.50 per set (both seats). The price incudes postage. (£.7.50 to UK / EU.)
This will prevent the guides from breaking, is easy to fit and remove. Can be done with the seat and guide in place. Fitting time 10 minutes.
PM me with your order. Once I have sufficient orders, I will let everyone know where to make their payments and have them made and get them off to you within a couple of days. Postage delivery time is aprox 6 - 10 days. I will post registered mail with tracking number.

4 so far....c'mon guys... This will save you money and hassles at some point...you'll wish you had done the mod .... The cost of having a new guide fitted will be at least an hour in labour at an indie, plus the cost of the replacement part...

Great solution, would an Allen or Hex screw look a bit better?

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
It has to be a self tapping screw..I doubt you can get hex or allen head screws as small as is required here...The screw has to be no more than 6mm long, and no more than 2.9mm thread diameter. You can get machine screws that small with hex / allen heads, but not self tapping screws.
I don't have a problem if you want to go in search of your own screws though...maybe you can get a hex or allen head screw over there...if so, your choice...

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
Could you not use some of your (now infamous) sex bolts? You'd need to put a larger hole through the guide, but I think they would likely provide a stronger fixing than a small self-tapper. It would need a slim flange on the back piece, but I see they do come with both allen and slotted heads.

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
Hi Rob.
The entire item is only 30mm x 30mm and each arm of the Z is only 7mm wide, and the space in the actual guide through which the seatbelt slides is aprox 2,5mm at it's narrowest in the center...See pic below.
The bulge in the base ostensibly keeps the seatbelt off the leather of the seat, but also makes it impossible to fit anything else in the aperture. The reason for self tapping screws is because they have such "coarse" threads and it's the threads cutting into the plastic which creates the locking strength vs a bolt with a nut at the other end which has more of a "clamping" system to hold parts together. If you guys can get "fancier" headed small self tappers in the UK, it's no big deal to fit your own screw. The critical issue is size and length...(who says size doesn't matter..) The thickness of the guide arms at the points where the screws moust be fitted is only 7mm. The overall width of the arm at that point is barely 32mm, and one needs to keep the size of the drilled holes as small as possible to avoid any weakening of the guide, hence the 1,6mm holes for a 2.5mm - 2.8 mm screw. Finally the screw can't be more than 6,5 mm long or it will penetrate into the area where the seatbelt will slide through, and if it does, it will rip the seatbelt fabric as it catches on the screw points protruding there. If you can find a "fancy" headed screw of max 3mm x 10mm you can use them, but remember to trim the screw down so as not to protrude through. The metal of the Z is 1,6mm plus 7mm of plastic = 8,6mm, minus ,5mm to be safely inside the plastic = max 8mm of thread on the screw. You will need to drill and insert the screws completely before trimming the screw to length so that you have already created a thread inside the plastic hole, once the screw is trimmed to length, you will lose it's sharp point making it more difficult to get it to cut into the plastic for the first time.
I would have also preferred to have had mini bolts, but there just isn't the space to work in the aperture, and anything protruding in there will catch on the seatbelt fabric.
If you look at the scale on the tool and the gap in the center of the guide..you will see 2,5mm is a generous estimate..it may be as little as 2mm...

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
... Looked at two of the largest screw merchants...neither had anything other than the counter sunk head with a Phillips drive, and a domed head with Phillips drive....
It occured to me that the only places I had seen some really exotic self tapping screws was on appliances...stuff like microwave ovens have torx drive screws, unfortunately they're too big though...but no doubt, small exotic headed screws will be found in that industry...maybe someone on this forum manages or works in an appliance producing environment...they would have tons of exotica.
So, in short..the mod comes with countersunk or domed...my preference is countersunk for such a screw with Phillips drive....if I had a choice of exotics, I would like to see a very flat discus head of around 5mm dia with a torx 8 drive...black heads on a black Z, or brushe aluminium on a silver Z...I can dream I guess.
Just for your interest, here's a pic of the "Z" unmounted..you can see the curves required for it to seat snugly on the seatbelt guide...And those are the best screws available as self tappers go...
It is curved left to right and top to bottom, with a twist through the diagonal......sounds like time for a drink...with a twist of lemon....

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
Hi Cap'n...a rivet would need to extend into the aperture where the belt slide through, also, it would be a PITA if you wanted to remove the seatbelt and or seat...you'd need to drill out the rivets...but ultimately the intrusion into the seatbelt slide area isn't acceptable given the tight fit - 2mm.

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
C'mon guys!! I have 10 confirmed...I need another 10 guys to order so that we can all save on replacing these guides in future...If your guide is broken at the moment, it will work as a fix to hold the broken arm in position, and if / when you replace the broken unit, you can transfer this mod to the new guide and prevent it from breaking - ever again!!
Here's a better pic for those who are wanting "silver" (polished aluminium)...
and one fitted on my car...

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
I assume you need to drill 4 small pilot holes for the screws.
If you don't you would risk cracking the plastic, wouldn't you?

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
Yep...The self tapper is 2.9mm thread diameter...a 2,5mm bit will be perfect...it allows the screw to cut a thread, whilst not being so small that it risks causing any cracks - hairline or worse....and can be tightened comfortably until the screw countersunk head beds into the reciprocal of the Z.
The holes in the Z are 3mmD. so the 2,9mm screw is a snug fit. The holes can be drilled right through the arm, just make sure you're carful not to hit the guide as it goes through...The plastic is soft enough not to require any serious pressure for a 2,5mm bit to pass through it...

What about using tiny black screws ...the type used to mount computer circuit boards/components. They are very neat in appearance and should blend better ?

BMG...Snoops has the right idea...use your own initiative to source the screw you would prefer...The cost of the screws I have used were around 2p for four....I'm not familiar with the screws used in computer boards...but thanks for the heads-up...I'll pop into my IT support guy tomorrow and see what they have in their spares dept...

There you go !! those "button head panel screws look really neat with the allen key drive in the middle....yummy!!! I like the 2,2 mm thread x 9,6mm ones with the 4mm head !!! They would be perfect...you'd just need to shorten them to 8mm long so they wouldn't protrude into the seatbelt guide channel and snag on the belt itself!! Well done Snoops!
Those are the type of screws found on many appliances to fix their steel covers at the back....

Yep..the "button head panel" ones from the Model shop.....at the bottom of the page... and they give the sizes available...The 2.2mm x 9. ? long ones are perfect if they are trimmed shorter to 8mm. And I think they would look very smart.

Ah, yes, they look good. I was looking at the other link from Snoops. The picture there doesnt look like self tappers.
Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
How does the head diameter of the "Button Head Panel Screw" (4.0) compare with the head size of the screws shown in the example? If they are smaller would that allow for the bracket design to be altered to more accurately match the official zed "Z".

Re: SEATBELT GUIDE MOD FOR SALE...20 BUYERS NEEDED
Hi Dave, Personally I would prefer the button head screw..it's a 4mmD head vs a 5mmD countersunk screw head.
