"She" needs a name... Although I'm start to like the sound of 'Boomer' - in which case, HE would be my first male car!
Is that acceptable for a Z??

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Well, what should I do? I don't like the look of the chrome grilles with the red. Possibly black, and black black boots.
I love the old white-wall tyre look. Shame that its not really possible with low profiles. Or is it?

Black would look cool as a contrast, smoked rears and side repeaters, front bumper markers, nose grills, tint on headlights, and black/anthracite for wheels - that should be enough to think about unless you say No chance
You could always play about on photoshop or paint with different colours to help you decide

Anthracite is my initial and primary choice, but was thinking of doing something a bit different.seasurfer wrote:Black would look cool as a contrast, smoked rears and side repeaters, front bumper markers, nose grills, tint on headlights, and black/anthracite for wheels - that should be enough to think about unless you say No chance

I kinda know what it'd look like too, as when I picked up the car, the boots were so dirty they kinda looked anthracite
Maybe even anthracite side grilles.
Anthracite.

Only if you do yours bright green first - be a bit daring !!!!
Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 Needs a name...
Messed around with photoshop (for the very first time, so be kind!) and this is the mock-up.
I've made the wheels too dark, but you get the jist...
I agree with Barry; 'ex nay' on the side grilles.
and I prefer the kidney grilles with the chrome surrounds.
However, the smoked lights look very tidy and I quite like the windscreen surround idea.

Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 Needs a name...
Windscreen and wheels and lights look really good...I reckon keep the chrome kidney grills too.If yo do the wheels get a set of CF center caps in Black / silver...The blue / white caps don't work on the dark rims....Check on the Stock Exchange...I think someone had a set for sale...
Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 Needs a name...
I would take a lead from what is currently coming off production lines. Carbon fibre is the new chrome and black wheels are the contemporary, aggressive look. Therefore, black wheels and black or carbon fibre front grills. Personally, I don't like the Z3 side gills any other colour than being the same as the surrounding paint. At the end of the day it's all personal, subjective taste and a bit of fun.
When/if you sell, it is ideal if the modifications are easily reversible so that you appeal to the widest possible audience as many (even those who plan modifications) like an OE car.
Almost forgot - with red car and black wheels - must have red brake callipers.

Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 Needs a name...
Bit more fine-tuned...
What do we think of the wing mirrors?
Im thinking of a matte black vinyl wrap for the windscreen surround as I've heard about the issues re: moisture under the OEM retrofit trim.

Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 Needs a name...
The black windscreen surround made me chuckle. BMW actually applied a black vinyl wrap to the early Z3s and one of the first questions people with it ask is how to get rid of it.
I guess fresh matte black will look better, but it still reminds me of an old Austin Princess.

So, it turns out making things white and keeping the shading of objects correct is very difficult...
Here are my attempts:
Not keen on the white side vent at all, but I threw it on, as I had mentioned it earlier in the thread.

The white actually looks like bright silver in your photoshopped pic....maybe you should stay with anthracite...and do the lights and windscreen black.

the white is different - i like it myself.

Hi DavidZ3,
have to say that while visiting the forum and reading your post I decided to join you!
And I have a kind sugestion for you: the Z3 is one of the most perfect and affordable roadster made in our "recent" history; you've got a Red car which looks perfect as it is .....(and one of my favourite combination which fit perfect on Z3 ), why not keep it as it is and enjoy it, instead of black or white rims, mirrors, etc? It's almost a historical vehicle, better keep it original!
All the best,
Zeti

Little bit of an update...
Somebody reversed into my car a week or so ago, so I've been sorting that out. Thankfully they were decent enough to knock on my door and give me all the necessary details.
SCARLET is going in to the bodyshop at the beginning of next month, and this is could be a blessing in disguise, as one of the alloys was slightly damaged on collision, which the cost of refurbishing will obviously be paid by the culprit's insurance, meaning that I could get the other 3 done for a very reasonable price.
I've been looking around t'interweb, and I'm really liking the look of 'hyper black' alloys. It's similar to gunmetal, but with a bit more of a shine. I absolutely love the different shades the finish gives off when different levels of light hit them. It makes them almost look two-tone. Below is just an example of what I hope my wheels can achieve:
With regards to the side gills/grilles/vents I have decided to keep them the same for now, but I have sprayed the mesh bright silver to add a little wa-wa-woom (german, not french). All credit for this idea goes to Barry/Southernboy. It's a really subtle mod, but boy does it make a difference!
I will add a photo of the side gills from my phone later on.

good choice on the name David
Hyper black looks really good, you get the best of both worlds and it really suits red cars.
post up some pics when it's done.

Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 - Scarlet
Finally, a long overdue update!
Scarlett went into the body shop and got rid of some unwanted wrinkles caused by a careless Astra. At the same time, she got some new rubber, and fully refurbed wheels!
As you can see from the pictures, I am currently toying with some black vents... I actually really like them - they make her look more 'aggressive'.
And just last week I finally fitted the new brushed aluminium centre console, and threw on a couple of red leather gaiters too:
...and whilst my centre console was out, I decided to FIT MY ROLL HOOPS!!! As some of you know, I was contemplating selling them to help with my fast approaching snowboarding adventure. I am SO happy that I didn't...
Apologies, she is not the cleanest at the moment, but the weather was too nice at that very moment to pass up the photo opportunities!
The next updates are unfortunately in the not so near future, and those are all pretty much leather work. Red and black leather seats to arrive at some point, armrest and rear cubby lid to be covered in tanin red leather, and a couple of door armrests too!
Also, I will eventually replace the steering wheel with a Z4 steering wheel, to match the centre console.
And to finish today's update, I will be contacting a car trimmer today about manufacturing my wind deflector design. With the intent of producing many, eventually for other roadsters too:
That's all for now, folks. Let me know what you think.... I really love to read your feedback!

Where did you get you carbon wheel badges from? I am after a set that fit to genuine wheels which don't keep falling out like the cheaper ones I've used before.

I got them from Spurs Fan, so I'm not aware of their origin. One thing to note is that apparently my MV2's aren't genuine... It doesn't bother me at all, but it could explain why the wheel caps fit, compared to the issue you're having g8jka! Hahag8jka wrote:Where did you get you carbon wheel badges from?

I can't say what the cost of them are...I got mine from the USA via eBay. I also got the boot and bonnet badging at the same time... all perfect fitting items.
Re: DavidZ3's 2000 1.9i Z3 - Scarlett
Also... I can only presume that my centre caps were a decent fit straight out of the box. I handed them in with the wheels when they got refurbished.
For all I know, they are held in place by blu-tack on the front wheels, and some used Wrigley's Extra Ice (Whitening) on the rear wheels.
