Tyres - which ones from where?
Tyres - which ones from where?
The date codes on my tyres (vredstein sessanta 245/40/R17) don't make for comfortable reading. Fronts are 0803 (2003); rear are 0710 (2010). I've also got bad wear on the inner rear o/s tyre (otherwise is ok).
Time to replace the tyres...
My impression is that the vredstein tyres are horrible. I know they are old, but still. I'm not impressed. For other cars I've bought Avon and/or Hanook tyres and steered clear of Pirellis. Sound ok?
Also, any recommendations for buying/fitting? Anyone tried one of these online sites (black circle etc), which seem to be cheaper than ATS etc.
Cheers,
Tom

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
I've had vreds on my m for 2 years and they are great. Get a top review and are not too expensive!
Un even wear is due to the tracking not being set correctly.

Thanks! Maybe my vreds are just old
Good to read that you've had a better experience

As long as you keep all four corners the same tyre they should be fine.
Falken 452s or 453s get good feedback from zed drivers. I had hankook V12s (iirc) on my 2.8 and they were fine. Khumo tyres are quite good for budget tyres too.. Had those on other cars with no problems. Currently got those on the Alhambra and there very grippy

Trouble is there are so many choices for tyres!
Everybody will reccomend there own preference.

It's all down to budget at the end if the day. High end tyres like Conti contact sport 5s, Goodyear eagle F1s michelin pilot sports are superb

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
Cheers guys.
True, a list of 'rotters' would be good There's more than one good option as you say.
As I'm replacing 4 I'll have to pass on the super high end stuff. I don't push the car that much tbh, so a good set of mid range would prob be ok.

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
You also asked where to buy. I had to replace a punctured tyre on our daily car. Best high street price was from National at £206 (yes for one). I bought from Black Circles for £125 and had it fitted at the main dealers ship for a £5 premium. So I would certainly check prices with them again and be confident in buying. For the Z3 I put on a pair of Falken 452 (225/50R16) with nitrogen fill, in October, at £80 each at TAMS tyres in Gateshead. Hope that is of some help.
Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
Have used Black Circles for my 4x4 Kia Sorento and the Z3, very competitive price wise and fitting and balancing included in their prices.

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
Also looking at tyres, was looking at the Michelin Pilot Sport 3….when I looked on continental.com, "oddly" it came back with no sizes for the Z3 etc….must be wrong I assume…I was going to call the stealership and see what * rated tyes they recommend….unless I am mistaken, when Zed's came out, they usually came with michelins on….but yeah, openly acknowledge that technology moves to an extent, plus of course the sellers just re-branding to give the illusion of new stuff…
On the Michelin Pilot Sport 3, they have an A for wet and F for economy, so they sound grippy in the dry and with good stopping I assume….
Spoke to BMW today and they could find ANY * rated rear tyres from Conti or anyone else....they were going to go away and have a look at it...

Another place you could try is Event Tyres. I've used them a few times including for the Zed. They come to your home (or work) and they are good prices.
Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
I recently needed 2 rears that were being put back on instead of the old ones after a wheel refurb. Went for maxxis maz1 which I have on my summer wheels. Cheapest I could find was 80 per tyre delivered. Found a company called funky tyres (although they don't have a website) which I emailed to get a price. They import them from Europe and deliver direct to your door. They were 72 each delivered and most of the other tyres I asked for prices on were also cheaper than anywhere else. Delivery was fully tracked and they came within 3 days.
I have found in the past it is usually cheaper to buy them online and get somewhere local to fit them which is usually around a tenner per tyre.

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
Hi, I don't have a preference myself but last week while searching for information about strut braces I saw a thread about Tramlining and it all being cured by changing tyres.... Do a search for "tramlining" and you will find it, will tell you which to avoid at least and also the ones that people have stuck with after they changed and stopped the tramlining
Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
Only ever had Conti sports on mine, can't complain they grip really well but not in the snow!

Re: Tyres - which ones from where?
I was told that ZE912 are now discontinued, replaced by the ZE914, which are meant to be a bit more hard wearing and more economical on fuel (yeah of course).Vic-Z3 wrote:Falken Ziex ZE912
When I first got my zed 3+ years ago the Falkens certainly improved the tramlining and I've had them fitted ever since.

On the percentages the 914's have it.

Hi,
I got a set of Hankook Ventus Prime 2 K115 225/50 R16 W (96), Reinforced from Blackcircles fitted at one of their preferred garages locally. £360 great service and price, and a vast improvement over the6 year old Pirellis.
Recently visited our local Costco, the do mainly Michelin and to a lesser extent Bridgestone. The Michelins in the above size were about £97, worth the £25 joining fee. Worth checking if you have one nearby, just ring and ask for the tyre bay, if not stocked they can usually get it in. Once in a while they do a £50 off a set of 4 deal.
