Reproofed roof
Reproofed roof
Re proofed the fabric roof of my car today, I did it last year but wasn't convinced that I'd done a particularly good job.
I used the Autoglym product again (as it happened to be in my Christmas stocking) and remembering how 'sappy' and difficult it is to get the sealer off the glass and paint I bought a very thin polythene dust sheet for £1 from Morrisons which I intended to use to mask off the top part of the car. I raised the hood sufficiently for me to fit it one side but it took a bit of working out to be able to do the other side and to then get back in / out in order to put the roof down without becoming snookered. This operation is made even more difficult by the presence of the slightest amount of wind which appeared on cue out of nowhere as I started the procedure and I must have looked like John Cleese. The next issue was overspray and the way I got around that was to pour the contents of the bottle into a plastic dish and proceeded to apply it with a paintbrush. Even so I managed to get some runs onto the paintwork which will take a couple of goes to get rid off but I must admit, it is near the top of my list of hated jobs.. heres a pic of the sheet in place:

Designed or not designed, that is the question.
Re: Reproofed roof
On my list of jobs to do but I was thinking of newspaper and masking tape and keeping a bucket of water and sponge nearby for any spillages.

It's a pity you couldn't use a garage to avoid the wind

Re: Reproofed roof
Have recently bought some Fabsil proofer off of Amazon(£12 for 2.5 lt) which you brush on.
If it works, it should go on easily & hopefully a tin that size will last a few years.

I like the sound of brushing it on rather than spraying, much easier to keep it where you want it. Will you let us know if its any good when your done?

I have seen that blood spattered sheet on Crimewatch Tim.
I'm surprised you've shown it on here again.....

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

You could have done it with the windows down, then used the key in the driver's door to raise the windows into place.Alan W wrote: I raised the hood sufficiently for me to fit it one side but it took a bit of working out to be able to do the other side and to then get back in / out in order to put the roof down without becoming snookered.

There must be a business opportunity for someone to offer a mobile cabriolet reproofing service.
Everyone I know thinks that it is a real bug*er of a job.
I'd certainly pay someone to do mine...

If I was one of those mobile alloy wheel refinisher chappies, this would be a service I'd think would keep me very busy.
Re: Reproofed roof
I have used both Autoglym (spray) and Fabsil Gold (paint on). Both seemed to work well in terms of reproofing and the Fabsil is a lot easier to use because it can be brushed on. After using Fabsil Gold you get a very slight "whiff" in the car which disappears completely after 24-hours when it's completely dried - unfortunately it's a similar smell to when a youngster has been sick in the car However, it's not a problem that would put me off using it again.Davejue1 wrote:I like the sound of brushing it on rather than spraying, much easier to keep it where you want it. Re: Reproofed roof
standard tent waterproofing available from any camping store.... Cheap as chips, easy to spray on, doesnt run or mess up the paint work, applied every couple of months - water beads perfectly.
Re: Reproofed roof
Why not apply the autoglym with a brush, it's much easier than spraying it on. I've applied it this way on my Z3 and the wife's Mini Cabriolet. A 2" brush works a treat.

Same here, done mine with Autoglym and a brush before Xmas and still beads every time I wash it. (Haven't had any proper rain to test it since November!)
Re: Reproofed roof
Quick question, what Autoglym product did you use (the spray one)?
Is it worth cleaning/washing it before applying the spray?
Thanks!

Re: Reproofed roof
brush on and yes, best to clean the roof first!
Re: Reproofed roof
Just found this rather good tutorial on Youtube on using the Autoglym product
Notice he didn't protect the paintwork though!
