Window only moves 2cm pre-press
Window only moves 2cm pre-press
The driver’s side window will only go up or down in 2cm increments: I can get the window to go up and down but I have to repeatedly press the window switch.
The window moves smoothly when the door is lowered and raised, so its not a mechanical problem. I’m thinking it’s a senor. Anyone had a similar problem and can suggest a fix?
Thanks, Richard

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
The switch sunk into the surround or the surround warped, broken etc etc. Remove the switch, test, if it works, its the surround. If it doesn't, check the switch for missing springs, broken bent bits of plastic.
Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
Yup, what he said. Try swapping switches left and right. From memory the clips on the surround that hold the switch in place are delicate and may snap off. The good news is that the surround is still available (or at least it was a few years ago - ask me why I know?!).

Hi,
Before you start replacing switches I think your first thought about sensors is correct.
I have had this problem once & could not get a fix.
Then I had to replace the battery and everything went back to normal. Since then I have been told that disconnecting the battery can trigger a 'reset' of the window electrics.
Worth trying before you do anything else.
Hope it works.

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
The control units for the doors/windows are clipped to the inside of the battery compartment cover. If a switch swap and battery disconnect doesn't change anything try swapping control units to see if the problem moves.
I had some issue with my driver's door window (the details of which I can no longer recall) and I ended up buying a new window motor and that solved it. Was pricey a few years ago and is likely to be more so now.

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
Thanks for the advice. I should have said I've already swapped over the window switches and its always the drivers side that does't work while the passenger side does, no mater which switch is used - hence not a switch problem.
I'll give the battery reset a go.
Thanks.

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
To reset the controllers, you remove fuses no25/26.
Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
When you get your window lift/lower problem sorted give the window channel rubbers a coat of silicon spray to lubricate them. You will be amazed how much easier and quieter they go up and down. These often go Unmaintained.

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
I tried the battery removal reset but that didn’t work. I couldn’t change over the controllers as the dinky connection mechanism defeated me, surely it’s not a case of just pulling harder (I’ve broken too many things doing that). Is there an easy way of separating them?
I’ll give the fuses a go next.

Re: Window only moves 2cm pre-press
Fuses are simply an easier solution to the awkward battery, next up is controllers. Remove fuse, disconnect controller, inspect contact points, look for wear, dryness etc. Clean, connect then insert fuse.Motorhead wrote:I tried the battery removal reset but that didn’t work. If that does not work, then try swapping them.
