Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Well done Jet.
Just got the magazine today.
Anyone not got it yet will be very pleased when they do.
Excellent article worthy of front cover, you have done very well

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
I would also like to add my congratulations to Jet on the cover and article in the latest club mag.
Interesting to see that it has side repeaters, like the UK cars. Assume the car was first bought in Sweden, and their regulations at the time were like ours.
GG obviously keeps a keen eye open in the market place, as I do. The place to find most Z1s is, logically, the German site "mobile.de".
I remember a couple of years ago there was a zero mile German car for sale. Interestingly it could not be put on the road in Germany as it had not been registered when bought. I understand that there is a problem with the Euro emission regs. and the car had to be sold outside Germany where registration laws are different.
Perhaps that is why a Swedish car has appeared in the UK? Any thoughts? Unfortunate for the seller as prices in Germany seem to be above those here.

Yes, well done Jamal, a great article.
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Thank you gents, I was as surprised as you are, more publicity for the humble Z1, what did you think of the car?
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Hi Jet,
I wish you had told me you were going to see that red Z, I'm sure I could have swopped number plates without them knowing.
See you all at Gaydon, not sure about Silverstone yet.

Anyone fancy posting up what it looks like? I forgot to renew my CC membership (irritating that it doesn't renew automatically).

Best thing in this edition of the magazine is Jet's photograph of his Z1. The more you look at it, the more subtle it becomes.
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Yes, congrats to Jet for winning first place with the Z1 photo outside St Paul's. That would make a great poster for the office!
Fancy selling the high res image file?

Mileage is the same, but those seats.....is that a shadow or 3 big wrinkles? If its the same car, those are new.
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
I will be truly astonished (and I am sure we will all be delighted) if this car reaches the auction estimate.
From the photo it's hard to believe the seats are not creased. Perhaps after so few bottoms on them over a long period they have reacted badly to recent activity! Certainly doesn't look mint.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
People were paying £40000 for a new Z1 in 1989, which in today’s money is £86,876. So the ‘new’ Z1 at estimate £50,000 to 60,000 should be good value. But it wasn't a good investiment, he'd have got a better return from a bank.
Z1 1989 # 465 of 8000
M635CSi 1989 # 480 of 524
3.0CSL 1972 # 385 of 500

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
£40,000 for a Z1 in 1989 sounds a bit rich to me. Perhaps that was a "Sunday Times" price when people wanted them immediately. List price January 1990 was £30,000.
I have the invoice!

Prices are different around the world.
Last list price in Holland €66299.00 incl taxes.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Everything I have ever read pointed to an RRP of £40/£45k, does one car at £30k mean the benchmark? However, didn't the release of the Z1 come just before a financial crisis of sorts, which might explain the £30k in 1990, one year later ...?
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
I have the UK 3 Series price list from September 1990 here (sad... ).
UK RRP for the Z1 is quoted there as £36,925.
Pat, you obviously got a -very- good discount.
Just for comparison, the E30 M3 listed at £28,200.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Anyone have a comparable price list from early 1989?
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
I may be wrong, but I don't believe that the UK RRP changed during the production run.
Just for context, it was almost exactly the same price as the original Lexus LS400.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
It's interesting to guess all the problems that this "new" car are going to give the new owner.
Is there a country in which the car can be first registered, or will it be a museum piece for ever?
The seat fabric has stretched (probably because it had shrunk over time, and then stetched when the first bums in 15 years sat on them).
As grease/oil flows down, it exposes the top of the bearings. Corrosion then happens at the exposed metal. We had this problem with trucks that were stored in war reserve, so it is possible here.
Serpentine belts that haven't moved in years will be permanently distorted. The belts in the doors may be similarly affected.
Hoses will probably be affected, but may be OK.
I think it's still worth a lot of money, but I wouldn't want to drive it without a thorough inspection and would budget another wodge of cash (£5k at a guess if you don't DIY) to get it ready for the road.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Humble apologies for my last misleading post, on the new car price in 1990.
My Cooper park Lane Invoice dated 8.11.1989 shows the on the road price as £37,416.00. I had forgotten the £5k deposit! Well it was some time since I looked at it and I am getting old!!!!!

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
£47,000. Not sold. Reserve not met
Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
There were some eye watering prices at the auction, or I need to recalibrate my perceived value of what is a classic car and their value.
The Z1 was bid to £47k which would have cost the buyer £54k with the commission and vat if sold. The passenger door had several deep vertical scratches where it was rubbing on the lower panel.
For current Z1 market value ... the £20k band ... you could also have bought a 1963 Fiat 500 for £21k, a 1970 Ford Capri Mk1 at £24.4k, Porsches were sought after by dealers with a 1989 911 930 turbo Coupe in the default Guards Red sold for £92k and a 1973 911 S 2.4 Targa selling for £106k.
BMW lots ... 1995 850 CSI manual at £14k, 1989 E30 Alpina C2 2.7 at £13.7k, 1959 Isetta 300 Not sold at £12k
How much for a 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GT accurately described in the sale catalogue as "simply rotten as a pear" and offered for sale with no reserve. Hint, the bidding started at £20k.
....... £132,250.

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Fascinating post Tony.
Amazed the Z1 did not go at £47k. I am clearly out of touch. What price an Alpina RLE?
As regards the Dino, I imagine that lb. for £ this must be the most expensive bucket of ferrous oxide in existence! Who was moaning about our plastics?

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Just noticed this Z1. 50,000 miles and a colour that is an 'acquired taste'.
http://suchen.mobile.de/auto-inserat/bm ... res=EXPORT
On the plus side, I can't see any cracks in the plastic, the hood is in decent condition and the seats have been retrimmed tastefully (compared to the paint job).

Re: Z1 on front cover of BMWCC SS
Hmm. That makes Magic Violet look truly subtle! That is definitely not for me
As for the Dino - well. I am somewhat familiar with the brown curse, as you know. However, that vehicle doesn't so much 'take the biscuit' as represent the biscuit itself. Is a Dion VIN really worth £130k these days? I read a story in Classic & Sportscar not long ago of a 246 in a very similar colour that had been bought with dubious drug money and then buried in a garden in California for something like 15 years before being restored, but I doubt it was as bad as the car here.

According to Classic & SportsCar, the Z1 did sell and it had less than 200km on the clock!
Either way that is BIG money
