Special Tool - Tappet Compressor
Special Tool - Tappet Compressor
To adjust the valve clearances on a 6 cylinder you need to compress the valve spring and blow the spacer out. This tool allows you to push the tappet cup down. With the tappet cup fully depressed, blow the spacer out using compessed air. The spacer can be easily inserted with the tappet compressed.
Below is an image of the tool that I made with dimensions...
Tappet Compressor
The tool needs to be cut to a length suitable to allow the clearances at the rear of the engine to be checked.

How much did the vanos cost if you don't mind me asking.

Thanks for the thread resurrection .
Coincidently, I did this job yesterday. I've hardened the tip by grinding the mild steel and welding some stainless onto the tip and grinding the weld to the correct profile.

Ha made a rookie mistake there and didn't check the thread date. I came to by clicking on your progress thread, I want to make this tool myself so quite interesting read. Have you ever considered doing the vanos yourself with one of the kits on ebay, they just seem expensive for what they are really.

Yes, but I think ECS Tuning is where I would look for the parts to start with. I think it's about £100 DIY or £500 if you get someone else to do it.aceman wrote:Ha made a rookie mistake there and didn't check the thread date. Yeah I have read most of that, you kind of get so far through and think this looks easy then you read a bit more and the doubt sets in and before you know it you have talked yourself out of it.

Re: Special Tool - Tappet Compressor
There's text and images to follow. It's just nuts, bolts. o-rings and seals. What could possibly go wrong?
If your vanos makes a noise now, just imagine some of the new noises you might hear!!

I have found a relatively cheep camshaft timing/locking tool on ebay so may start getting things together to do this.
