Tyres - A post to accumulate members' experience

Post by nkfb1 »

Dear All. Having recently gone through this process the range of tyres available and posts all over the place is somewhat mind boggling when going for a change.

So for all future purchasers for their Z3 I thought I'd start this as tyres suit some cars but not others and rim sizes etc etc.

If you take time to reply can you post rim sizes . etc

So to start -

1999 z3 2.8 Roadster 16 in rims . Mainly A and B road driving , occasionally spirited .. Michelin Primacy HP . 225 50 r16 92W . Very comfortable and quiet . Mild tramlining. Only lost it briefly once in wet conditions at 40 mph on a negative camber. Otherwise v stable .

16 inch limits a bit on choice but value wise for me a toss up between asymmetric tyres Falkien Ziex 914s (which we have on our other cars and like them a lot) and Avon ZV5 s. Gone for the Avons for a change (£82 ea) - will post back in due course once put through paces (after 200 mile wear in time of course).

Please help others in the future .... thank you

A good idea, but I think you need to add thinks like the age of the shock absorbers, is the suspension standard or lowered, have the front control arms balljoints been checked, the state of the control arm bushes (plus are they standard or poly) etc. It's really difficult to be sure that a good experience on one car will translate into a similar experience on another because there is such a mix of suspension out there - lots of cars will still be on 15-year-old suspension and lots of others will be on recent upgraded suspension.

Pre-facelift 1.9 Z3 - Michelin Primacy HP 225/50R16 all round - second set of these - good in the wet, last about 25k miles, lose grip below 3mm of tread, start to feel tramlining after about 10k miles

Previous set were Michelin MXMs as supplied new with the car. I run Michelins on the Sprite too, with Michelin innertubes. You may be getting the impression I quite like Michelin! :D

These days I use part worn Continentals for my part time usage car, a guy I know goes out to Germany and brings them back by the container load and I get top quality ones for around £35-£40 each fitted and balanced (as opposed to £120). I have also had Michelins and another make before (whose name escapes me) and all have suffered tramlining to various degrees.

You will get no consistency of answer as we all have our own preferences - just look at the answers so far.

The point is that people can't/won't use the forum search facility. If they did, they'd see pages and pages of recommendations about tyre choices.

I've been on this forum for nearly two years and have lost count how many times someone has asked what is the best/cheapest tyre for their car. Just as every fortnight someone will come on and write "help - my roof is leaking!"

Sorry to be a wet blanket

OK folks thanks so far and yes I agree people can put what their set up etc to their hearts content . I think that's the point.

FYI original shocks etc. on front and springs on back. New OEM shocks on rear. Front strut brace .

Re searching on the forum. Well yes I did and elsewhere on other specialist and non specialist sites but they are all very bitty ( no pun form Little Britain intended).

Over 180 people have viewed this so far so must have some interest. So come on guys and girls please share . Whether it be Avons, Falkens ( yes some like the 452s) Michelin , Nokian or Contis .

Feedback from Avon V5 so far . Excellent in dry . Quiet comfortable stable good feedback and no tramlining at all !!! They handle brilliantly . Cost for 4 £ 331 fitted by National tyres incl lifetime damage and repair guarantee.. MUCH better value IMO than the Michelins which would have been over £520, as only do 2k pa but time will tell in the wet >they are NOT going out in the SNOW and Ice.

BTW looking at other posts all over the place I am starting to think that new tyres really help with tramlining - as they get more worn this may emphasise the issue. Especially for those on lower profiles .

Cheers ....

From what I found the Avons from National were the cheapest best tyre in my tyre size - but you don't state yours, also if you do a big mileage then be careful as some don't last even thought they are v.grippy - In which case I would have gone back to Michelin Primacy HPs - have a look at tyrereview.co.uk. Also depends on whether you will be a dry driver or need all year round stuff. PS I don't use budgets. National worked out cheaper than Blackcircle, Ctyres Etyres Tyreshopper Mytyres or Camskill etc on line. There is an Avon discount code also A5COO at the mo.

I would not go for directional tyres if I were you although a lot of people seem to like the Falken F452's ( being phased out I think ). Asymmetrics seem to have a better write up to minimise tramlining. As for your roof assuming it is not any seal then Autoglym is excellent to clean and reproof. OEM from BM is also good. Neither are too expensive .

There's a deal on Avons at Nationwide at the moment. Buy 1 get another at half price.
I've just priced up two new front tyres and it works out at £232.26. Not a bad price.

Michelin Pilot Sport 3 - 225/40/17 on the front & Michelin Pilot Sport 93Y - 245/40/17 at the back.... Not as durable as Bridgstone RE002's, but to be expected from a soft compound tyre... excellent grip wet/dry etc... but may be a tad noisier than B/stones. Michelin about 30% more than B/stones and don't last as long.

So the list may turn out to be wide ranging as predicted and in the end use vs cost will come into it . Any bad experiences from anyone ? Any you would urge to stay away from ?

Can you give me a link to Nationwide tyres - I've searched all over and can't find anything.I'm looking for ZV5s for my e39 - best quote so far £183 for 2 from National but wouldn't say no to one for half price !!

You don't say what size your ZV5's are for the E39 but the same tyres for the M// at Asda are:

Avon
245/40R17 91Y ZV5 £98.50
Avon
225/45R17 94V XL ZV5 £85.40

Considerably cheaper than National.

I've just ordered a set of Continental Sport Contact 5 to be fitted at my local Halfrauds on Monday.

I'll let you know how they perform.

I thought that might be the case. Got a quote from tyreshopper.com for my e39 Avon ZV5 (225 55 R16 95Y - note, a bit wider than my Z3 tyres) £195 a pair fitted but offering a 5% discount so £175.50 and fitted at National so a few quid less than National's own quote in my previous post !! - ordering a pair later on.

My 2.2 Z3 has Goodyear Eagle F1s (225 50 R16). Don't know the price as were fitted by previous owner. They seem to be wearing well, they have good grip in the wet and DON'T tramline. Car has original suspension, bushes etc as has only done 40K miles!

e39 tyres are 225 55 R16 95Y. I got a qoute from Asda for £194.80 a pair fitted so a bit more than National. See my previous post.

I have Avon ZV5s on my e39 at the moment. They have great grip and are a quiet tyre. They have done 27000 miles a lot of which has been 'spirited driving' which I think is OK for a heavy car and a mid-priced tyre :)

I bought a set of Falken 453 from Camskill 11 months ago. Went for a slight increase in tyre width both front & rear (did the same with my previous Coupe with a set of 452s - alas no longer available - the tread pattern did look better than on the new 453 in my opinion). Wet weather grip and performance I find to be very good, there maybe other makes that maybe able out perform Falken with say ultimate dry grip, but as an all round performance tyre at a reasonable price I can't fault them. I was put onto Falken tyres by a couple of long standing owners on Z3M Coupe Forum when I bought my first Coupe back in 2005, one of the owners is a circuit driving instructor who regularly thrashes his Imola Red Z3 M Coupe around the Ring, couldn't get a better recommendation. Even with the increased tyre with, no spacers required on my car as clearance is adequate with the standard OEM Roadstars in place.
Only done 3000miles with them so far so they look like new!!!
Service from Camskill was excellent at a reasonable price, see details below.

I have Falken 452's fitted all round at the moment.

Iv'e been very happy with the dry grip, but like you said not available anymore. I bought them from camskil and had them delivered to the wheel specialist where I was having my wheels powder coated, so kind of got them fitted for free.

Only lasted 4 years and 15k. though.
Fuel efficiency is not something I consider with the limited miles I do.
Wet ability not an issue either as I dont knowingly go out when its raining.

Lets see how the Conti's are on Monday.

I used to think the FK452 was a great tyre for the price, but I was swapping run flats for them. I then went from PS2s over to 452s on the 335i and found them extremely crashy, noisy and the grip pretty poor all round, really didn't like the way they let go either, they sort of snapped and had no progression at all.
Fionas even noticed and asked if I had put run flats back on, I took them off after 1000 miles and put PS2s back on, night and day difference.

Ever since then I have stuck with asymmetrical Michelins, I even put the Latitude Tour HP Michelins on my ML.

One tyre I must mention though is the Dunlop Sport Max, I had the Dunlop Winter Sport 4D on my Merc estate and was blow away with the comfort and how they were almost silent, so tried the Sport Max summer tyre and that was the same, not saying everyone is looking for that from a tyre when on a Z, but for those that want comfort and silence rather than the ultimate in performance tyres they are worth considering.
Oh, and my average MPG went from 42 to 47 with them compared with the Conti Sport contacts that were on the car when I bought it.

Well I got some new tires today. I wanted the Michelin Pilot Sport 3 but they did not have them in stock so I got the Pirelli P1 Cinturato. All four tires for a total of AUD$669 including all fitting, balance, and alignment - no more to pay just drive away.

As expected the car is totally different and behaves like what we expect from German engineering BMW. No more tramlining or bump steer etc. The power steering is light. WOW!

Earlier today I got the car up on the hoist for an inspection. It's like new under there apart from the dust boots on the two front shock absorbers which have perished.

I changed my tyres yesterday to some Falkens FK453 all round. Compared to the Tyos and F1 directional tyres I had on the tramlining issues is now resolved and the car feels a lot more planted on some routes I drove today where tramlining made the car so unnerving at times but such a joy today. Just need to scrub them in now.

Scrubbing/ bedding is usually driving you vehicle with some caution until you wear the release moulding agent off the tyres and putting a bit of wear in for your suspension/caster angles etc. Today for example on a route I know well I could feel the front and back giving well before they should on dry roads it felt like pushing it in the wet. I hope my poor explanation suffices :)

I would have gone for Falken 453s also as I liked the 914s but they don't do 453's for 16" rims. Nearly went for Nokian Z line as their reviews are good also but again 17" and up - so size does matter then ! :)

I have got Conti Contact 5s on my other car and despite driving sensibly they do seem to be wearing quite quickly compared to others I have had.

Still happy with the Avons so far on the Zed. Glad you asked about scrubbing - did not know that was the technical term for it either .

Tyres - A post to accumulate members' experience

Post by Dino D »

I've recently fitted a set if Nexen 8000.
I used to have Falken 452's before. Not having had other tyres to compare I think the Falkens were ok.
Bearing in mind my car runs wide rims and is lowered with coil overs so this makes it a very different drive from stock.

I found the Falkens too snappy in the wet and wet braking was in my opinion ok.
Wear was good - 20k on fronts and 6-10k on rears (I needed to swap them from side to side on the rims to get 10k as the inner wear faster due to the camber on my car).
BTW This wear pattern is pretty similar to the 330i sport I used to have (on stock suspension).

I looked at the new Falken range but what put me off was the 'Eco' labeling.

I put a set if Nexen all weathers tyres our 2.8 Galaxy people carrier and was very impressed so checked out their sports tyres.
The N8000 resembles a Conti in its tread pattern (so 'straight' lines of tread and wide grooves, not v shapes). Not that it matters much but the tread and side wall design look great.
What really got me interested was the high rating the scores for wet weather braking in Autobild tests.

Haven't done much driving since fitting but so far can say they are more progressive and wet weather grip is good but as I don't use the car as much right now I can't compare fairly yet but so far seems good.
Will report back once they nicely scrubbed in and I've had a chance to go for a proper drive.

Also need to do proper alignment and corner weighting.

I put a set of Uniroyal Rainsport 2's on my 2.8 when I bought it in April 2011 and they're still going strong - probably due a change soon but they still have at least 6mm tread on all round 30,000 miles later. They're incredible in the wet too. Only downside being they don't make them any more as far as I'm aware - not sure how the Rainsport 3's compare.

I would too, from personal experience, a blow out due to excessive inner tyre wear was what brought me to this forum in the first place, came as a surprise to say the least!

Hi all,
Had some Avon ZZ3s (of course) fitted a short while ago, 225/45-17 fronts, 245/40-17 rears, not the XL version and, would you believe it, the tramlining has gone. Will have to wait a while to see if it comes back, but good so far.Went from North Wales to Taunton and back yesterday with a lot of rain most of the way and no bad behavior from the tyres at all. They also seem a lot quieter than the ones that were on the car when I bought it (cheap and nasty on the back, half-worn Goodyears on the front) and a much better ride than the XLs that were on it. Somewhere around £350 for all four, had them delivered to the place that refurbed the wheels for me, fitted, balanced, new valves and the old tyres disposed of all in the price. They're a directional pattern so they can be switched inside to out when the inner edges wear on the rears.

I have been watching this forum over the past couple of years specifically for tyres which eliminate a tramlining issue which existed immediately before the tyre change. Avons have cropped up on numerous occasions.

Another factor, which has been shown to aggravate tramlining, on this forum, is older tyres. So older Pirelli tyres might be worse than newer Pirelli replacements - but I agree that this brand has generally been described as a problem causing TL. I suspect that a lot of Z3s have older tyres because on a broad average basis they are low mileage cars with many being taken off the road in the winter and/or covering up to 5k miles pa.

Bleeding gutted I've picked up a screw in one of my new rears fortunately not on the side of the tyre, but the Falkens I bought have been performing well not quite as grippy as my old goodyears but I can live with that as the trade off with having no tramlining makes the car feel more planted on some longer sweeping bends that used to feel quite unnerving.

My 2.0l suffered with tramlining a lot since I bought it 2 years ago. It had continental contisport 2 all round when I got it but I don't know how long they had been on for.

When I took the car in for its mot last week I needed a new tyre and the the rest were low so I decided to change them all. I was going to get falkens as per the recommendations but on the garage recommendation ended up buying bought some Barum Tyres (bravuris 2 for the rears and bravuris 3 for the fronts) - (they are made by continental).

They were £100 each for the rears and £90 for the front so total outlay of £380 and this week I have done 500 miles in the car with no tram lining at all... I am very pleased with them.

My wheels are
Front - 225/45 r17
Rear - 245/40 r17

Evening all
I've noticed a few people mentioning that they don't know how old their tyres are, if you look closely at the sidewalls of the tyres you'll find a four-figure code, normally quite small but easily seen once you know it, and normally only on one side of the tyre. It'll be something like 2812, which means the tyres were made in the 28th week of 2012. Most tyre depots keep a fairly limited stock in which gets turned over quickly, so you won't normally get old stock lying around, especially when it's a popular size like most Z3s are fitted with. Anything over 5 to 6 years old is generally considered to be past it's use by date, I've changed many a tyre in the past that's still had plenty of tread left but was getting close to falling apart. Well worth checking the date codes if you're unsure of their age.
Still very pleased with the Avon ZZ3s on mine, a huge improvement over the ones that came off.

Right, as I've still not sold my coupe, I need a pair of front tyres.

I am looking at

Barum - £61 (as mentioned by a member above)
Avon ZZ5 - £65 (had ZZ3 before were good)
Falken 453 - £63 (had 912 and 452 before were fine)
Kumho Ecsta Le Sport - £63
Vredestein - £70
Goodyear Eagle F1 - £74

Hankooks and Toyos are the same sort of price.

Any ideas, I think I'm edging towards the Avons

Hi,
New to this site having just bought a 2.8 Z3, the guy a dealer down in Holsworthy had just put these tyres I,ve never heard of - Blacklion champoint BU66 on the front was a bit sceptical as they are Chinese and not too expensive, I.ve read a few reviews on them which seem positive so replaced the rear with the same as the previous ones had cracked sidewalls. The ride is a little softer which I don,t mind and noise levels are acceptable and they stick to the road like glue going up and down Cheddar gorge and she handled very well on some interesting bends through the Peak District last weekend, so might be worthwhile giving them a go, I,ll keep you posted if I start to lose the back end too often!

Regards

I'm on my second set of Avon ZZ3 and they are excellent tyres from a well known manufacturer.

My Zed is my daily driver and has done around 45,000 miles in the last 26 months on ZZ3s.

Incidentally, I got mine from ATS Euromaster where they had a deal whereby you pay for three and get the fourth one free, although that was four months or so ago. Still might be worth a call though.

Have you tried poly bushes or a strut brace?

I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..
