Hi Ian
There's a post on the upcoming events about Silverstone 2014 if you can post there, so that all the posts are together. Unless you want a different list for the Z1
Thanks

2 days to go before the BMWCC club display passes are withdrawn. If your planning to attend this years event, I recommend getting your tickets before the deadline, so you aren't forced to park next to Riff & Raff.

I shall be there both days again this year, but in the 3.0csl and I am also booked to do the AA 'Grand Tour', which is a rally that involves a trip out into Northants and Oxfordshire before we arrive at the circuit and another parade lap at some point during the weekend. It would be good to catch up with fellow Z1 enthusiasts, though we shall be in the old car this time.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Where are we meeting up at Silverstone on saturday morning and at what time? We will be travelling from the north so will not be joining the convoy from the south.

the "Super Sausage Café" near Paulersbury some 6/7 miles south of Towcester on the A5. The "Super Sausage Café" (post code NN12 7QD) is approximately 10 mins. away from the circuit and boasts large car park, hot and cold food dishes, takewaway sarnies etc.

I'll look forward to catching up with you guys at some point. Catherine and I are down to be there on both days, but in the CSL, so I am going to make every effort to get it onto the Coupe Register part of the Car Club display, despite my pass being for something entirely different - Silverstone's silly way of selling tickets these days!

See you at the weekend.

Gents,

Sorry for the delay, but we need to be in situ by 9.30am, so I suggest we keep the super sausage meet short. Apparently post 9.30 it is restricted.

The hard standing area at the BMWCC stand is where you heading for.

Thx

Good to see all my muckers at Silverstone on Saturday and with the cars looking so good too.
I hope you all had good runs home and it was great to see Darren on Sunday too - along with very up-market hospitality at the Ferrari OC (thanks Darren)

Yes Phil, it was tragic. I did fear the worst when the Air Ambulance seemed to be hovering for ages before landing and then there seemed no rush for it to take off again. Denis Welch was a tireless Healey campaigner and will be sorely missed by many in historic circles and his family will be worse still.
It just shows how we take safety so much for granted in these modern days, with rigid cars, roll cages and hans devices. The lotus Denis was driving dated from that time that people like Jackie Stewart refer to, when F1 alone would often lose five of its best drivers to death each year.
All we can say is that Denis Welch was regarded by all who came into contact with him as a true Gent and he died doing what he loved.
Best regards,

Sam Lever.

Well we had a bit of drama getting to Silverstone, there we were bombing down the A5 looking forward to breakfast at the Super Sausage cafe with the rest of the gang.

Then disaster struck all the dashboard lights came on like a Xmas tree, the temperature gauge was just about hitting the red square. There now followed a period of squeaky bum time  as I desperately tried to find a lay by to pull over in, as we were in the outside lane and there was a lot of traffic on the road.

Fortunately the gods were with us and we didn't have to wait long for a lay by to emerge, I quickly pulled in and switched the engine off. When I opened the bonnet I was relieved not to see clouds of steam pouring out, water level was just a bit low.

The cause of the problem... the fan belt from water pump to alternator had shredded! this had been replaced some 6-7 years ago or about 10k-15k miles ago! So check condition of your belts, as rubber does have a shelf life, although this did seem rather a short time.

Anyway after a call to the RAC who were there in 10 mins (now that's service) problem diagnosed and after a short journey to get the part we were back on the road 2 hours in total. I also had the PAS belt changed at the same time, as both belts had been changed together previously.

Finally got to the cafe 2 hours late! really hungry as we hadn't eaten earlier...I swear that's the best breckie I've ever had!

The offending part

It was all to much for Chris... Good job I had a fold up chair in the boot.

Christ I must have been writing my post when Phil/Sam posted before me... When I say I had a bit of a drama I was speaking metaphorically... The above story is a true tragedy, sorry to hear this news.

No worries Keith. It has always said on boldon the tickets: "Motorsport can be dangerous" and Sunday was one of those days that proved it.
We all had a good time and that's really all you can say.
See you soon and that's one less thing 'off the list' for the Z1 that you don't need to worry about for a while.

Sam Lever.

Sad news indeed

Birmingham local press........

A woman watched in horror as her race driver husband was killed in a crash at the Silverstone Classic on Sunday.

Staffordshire businessman Denis Welch died when his 1960 Lotus 18 crashed during a race for pre-1966 Grand Prix cars at Silverstone in Northamptonshire.

The 69-year-old, from Staffordshire, was well known on the classic racing circuit both as a driver and through his car parts business Denis Welch Motorsport, based at Yoxall, near Lichfield.

Mr Welch’s son, Jeremy, said his mother Tina had gone to watch the race.

He said he was comforted by the knowledge his father “died doing what he loved”.

“My mum is devastated because her whole life was her partner and motor racing,” he said.

“Her world’s been turned upside down.

“They were married for 45 years and were both so passionate about classic car racing.

“He’d been driving for a very long time so he was fully aware of the risks.

“Accidents happen and it’s very unfortunate.

“The car turned upside down and he died almost immediately.

“The one consoling fact was that it was very swift and he died doing what he loved.”

Jeremy said his father, who completed a foundry apprenticeship in Wolverhampton, had driven the Lotus on a number of occasions and no blame was being placed on the car’s manufacturers.

And Jeremy added his brother Timothy was flying back from Chamonix in France, where he lived with his partner and their newborn baby.

Both inherited a passion for racing from their father.

Jeremy bought Denis Welch Motorsport, based at Yoxall, near Lichfield, from his father eight years ago.

He said he was pleased the Silverstone Classic race meeting restarted after the tragedy.

“That was what he would have wanted,” he said.

Essex-born Mr Welch began in business by buying a petrol station, but took time out to start a family.

Jeremy said: “When he restarted in the early 1980s he grew the race preparation business from there and it now employs 28 people.

“He was best known for his exploits with Austin Healy cars and built a business specialising in parts for those cars, which was well known around the world.

“He retired eight years ago, but continued to pursue his passion for driving race cars.

“He started racing in 1965 and although he took it seriously, never really had ambitions to race professionally.”

Police and the Motor Sports Association, the UK official motorsport governing body, are conducting a full investigation into his death.

The MSA said Mr Welch’s 1960 Lotus 18 clipped another car and rolled over at low speed during the event, organised by the Historic Sports Car Club.

A statement issued by the organisers on the Silverstone Classic website read: “It is with great regret that the organisers of the Silverstone Classic have to report that, following an accident in a race for HGPCA pre-66 Grand Prix Cars today, Sunday 27th July, the driver of car number 19, Denis Welch, succumbed to his injuries later in the circuit’s medical centre.

“All those involved in the event offer sincere condolences to family and the friends of Denis Welch at this very sad time.”

It's very sad in a way but we all do it for the love of Motorsport. I love the TT on the isle of Mann as well as being a major petrol head too... One old fellow said once in Ramsey at the TT, The reason they insist on full racing leathers was to keep the body in the bag.. He was at least in his 80's and was riding a Ducatti 1099. And yes he had full leathers.. Amazing guy.

So what ever happens in life, remember it's the love that unites us in a common sport.. That of engine, fuel and Tarmac.. Each one can kill us.. But it's what we love.

RIP Mr Welch..
A sportsman till the end.

Deeply saddened to hear of Dennis' accident. He was very well respected by the Austin-Healey community and will be sorely missed - our centre director has already had several calls from people wanting him to pass on their sympathies. I actually met and spoke to him at one of our events. Our thoughts are with his wife and family. As said, he died doing what he loved, but it will be very hard for them to carry on without him.

I've been told only this afternoon that someone died yesterday on the race track! I was cycling around the track and we saw the red flags and later an ambulance but didn't know it was that bad!!! Sad news!

And Greene Genie, I drove past you on my way to the Circuit on Satursday morning! I was following another Z3 but didn't have time to stop as I saw you too late!
Glad to know everything is fine.
