New Roof Tomorrow
New Roof Tomorrow
Its been a long time coming but its time for a new roof.
Mine is not in a really bad state. I did the renovo thing a couple of years ago but it needs doing again. The roof shows some wear and last winter i cracked the stupid plastic screen. I decided to go for a complete new roof.
If the fitter lets me take some pics tomorrow then I will attach for you all to see.

Z3 2.8 Progress Journal (Mine)
Z3 1.9 Sport Progress Journal (Wifey's)
I have an element of 'M-styling' on my car, If that's a good enough reason for the manufacturers to adorn a 320 with the M badge, then its certainly a good enough reason for me..

Snap, me too.
Hot Hoods from Romford are doing mine. So called "Premium" in blue so I'm interested to see how that works out.

How much are you paying? Mine is £569, Blue Mohair with relief pockets.

What are "relief pockets" ?
Re: New Roof Tomorrow
You will see them on the back quarter of each side of the roof. Apparently most have them apart from the very early z3's. They help to take some of the tension out of the roof when you are lowering it (I think). I am sure someone on the forum can confirm.

Look forward to seeing it. Excuse my naivety! Does the price quoted include frame work or is that just the canvas?
Cheers

Re: New Roof Tomorrow
£650, for me Tags.
About £75 more than the standard blue mohair roof. Not really sure of difference but will post later and tell all.

Re: New Roof Tomorrow
All done.
Quick and efficient service I thought by Ian of Hot Hoods. The premium hood does not seem to have a mink lining or gold thread but is apparently made of better material and a much better fit than the standard "basics" hood. I was surprised about how little "fettling" was involved. The edges of the hood simply attached to where they were supposed to go. THe most difficult bit was working inside a dark blue car when its 30 degrees outside.
Looks much better and has transformed the car

Any chance that you could post a couple of pics when it's finished Tim? I am trying to convince the other half about the burgundy roof.
Thanks
Dave
Re: New Roof Tomorrow
And Now some shots of it clean.
And now for the bad bit. I cannot have the roof down for a week

Re: New Roof Tomorrow
Thinking of having mine done but I just noticed in the photos attached that you can see the roof bars from inside the car when the hood is up ! On my car you can't see those as there must be another liner on the inside Why would that be ??
Re: New Roof Tomorrow
Pre facelift 04/99 had the single outer hood, post facelift the interior liner was added. Normally they can detach the outer hood from the lining and refit the new outer hood. I've decided to go the whole hog and having the new hood fitted with a new liner, it costs a bit more though but I thought well you don't renew the hood that often.Woody1000 wrote:Thinking of having mine done but I just noticed in the photos attached that you can see the roof bars from inside the car when the hood is up ! Re: New Roof Tomorrow
For what it's worth you will have to tell the fitter if you want to sell or keep the old roof.
My fitter expressed a preference for cutting the old cover off. Makes it much easier.
My old hood looked worn in patches but when I saw the true condition of the unseen parts I was very glad to be renewing it.
From my experience second hand hoods are just a complete no no.

Re: New Roof Tomorrow
Blue hood looks good. Blue on blue is a good colour match. Quick question please. I managed to get the lining of my roof wet. The car was in the garage when the rain came down and the garage door was sloping back towards the car so water run off went into the inside of the car and soaked the lining as the roof was down That aside was looking at the lining by both the passenger and drivers door and it does not fit tightly. You can push fingers underneath and touch the actual roof. Are they all like that if they have a lining. Thanks.
Re: New Roof Tomorrow
Tim, are you going to Softtopshop or are they coming to you? If you are going to them, you will have to drive to the top of a mill in stockport
The roof bars are shown on mine as I went for the roof without lining. My car is a June 98 car and the roof lining was not available on these cars. I could have had it as an option, however, I have been put off by seeing some of the issues others have seen over the years with linings. On the other hand, it does look more luxurious. It's down to personal choice.
I was asked if I wanted to keep my roof. I said no, so he proceeded to cut it. It makes the fitting job slightly easier.

Re: New Roof Tomorrow
that looks lovely, very nice indeed
Re: New Roof Tomorrow
To keep or not to keep the old hood. If you use my fit as a gauge, it took just over 4 hours. The hood removal, old sealant cleanup etc was made much easier by me telling the fitter I didn't want to keep the old roof. It meant he could cut it away and get to where he needed to work. If I wanted to keep it, he would have had to do a lot of that work from inside the car and would have added to the length of time of the fit.
If you keep, it will probably add 30-60 minutes to your fit time.
