Diff and Gear oil quantities.

Post by Davejue1 »

Hi all. Going to order the above from opie oils. Can anyone tell me how much of each I require? :)

Cheers

Recently did mine. Most of the oil and specs seem to be in quarts but basically you'll need 2litres of each

It's only 0.9l for the diff - at least on my car. You can check on the ETK database (change the setting for your particular car):

http://www.etk.cc/bmw/EN/vin/decoder/wb ... k17365/EN/

I recommend Castrol Syntrax Longlife Oil 75W-90 for the Diff and Castro Syntrans B Manual Transmission Fluid 75W for the gearbox.

Easy job to change both. A fluid pump / syringe helps!

Think I read the diff was 1.3 quarts for my 2.8. Anyway I didn't use all 2l bottles but was more than 1 bottle anyhow

In the smaller engine cars i.e. my 1.9, the capacity for both is around 1 litre (approx. 0.9 in diff. and 1.1 gearbox). In the bigger engine cars i.e. 2.8 and upwards, the capacities are bigger - I think the gearbox could be as much as 1.75. As said earlier, you'll need 2 litres of each type of oil for your 2.8.

Just gone on ebay to order the oils from opie and there's a firm selling the castrol syntrans B 75 in Germany. It's identical and works out £6 cheaper for 2 litres delivered. Call me tight if you like but every penny counts in my book! Anyone interested look up seller:smeagold-2008 :)

Dave,

I'm sure you will know your 2.8ltr will have a LSD which requires Castrol SAF-XJ (75-140) or equivalent, not the 75-90 for non LSD cars.

I am looking to do a full oil change this year as well, so thanks for the info on a cheaper source for the Syntrans B75.

Hi, I was aware of the LSD but you came in just on time with regards to buying the wrong oil. Found the correct stuff at the same place so just ordered it.
Thanks for the knees up :)

forget about the specified volumes, which vary a lot - the diff volume depends on which final drive gear set you have, if it has an LSD, and if it is a clutchpack or Torsen LSD too. Mine took a lot more than the stated volume - 2 litres for each gives you enough.

Top up with the car level, until oil comes out of the level/filler hole.
