Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
Watching some of the Tour de France over the w/e, stages 1 & 2, whetted my appetite to return to Yorkshire with the Zed. Made me think, would others like to join in and make a 'Zedfest w/e' of it? Or has this been done before in 2012 or earlier etc?? Thought of stunning countryside, good company, deal on a comfortable hotel and Yorkshire hospitality sounds like a plan. Could use stages 1 & 2 as skeleton routes? 2015 early summer June maybe? Any interest out there? The Valkyrie and I are up for it... Ci

Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
Hi Ci,
Count me in too. We did a loop around Yorkshire in the Zed mid June staying in Harrogate, Scarborough and near Beverley. The county is everything you say, and would be a great place to meet up/cruise.
There is a good Classic Car club event that takes place in Beverley town centre around that time each year. Might be an idea to include a visit to this (date for 2015 not known yet but plenty of time to find out) http://www.hu17.net/2014/06/09/beverley ... -for-2014/ .
Cheers,
Mark (Toony)

I know it's not what you are thinking, but I can highly recommend chasing the Tour if it comes back. With some planning, you could take in three (maybe four) views of the tour per day. I had some fantastic roads to myself as I blatted around the Ridings on Sunday .

Count me in as well.
The TDF won't be coming back to Yorkshire next year. The French allow the stages 1,2 and 3 to start overseas on alternative years and area have to bid for it.

Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
I was thinking more on the lines of a Zedfest w/e, like the one held in Keswick a number of years ago? Zedders came from all over the UK, to enjoy drives in the Lakes, and have some early morning 'speedos' too... I recall it was organised by a committee and very professional it was too. Must have been at least 30 Zds there so some 60 people. A great fest.
If we did this we'd need to get a group together to arrange and organise. I obviously can help a bit but I live in Dorset, so I reckon it will need people from nearer who are more familiar with the area. This is only a germ of an idea, but I reckon it has legs if people are prepared to a do a bit? Ci

Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
I was just throwing in an idea. It doesn't have to be the Tour. It could be anything. I've chased a few things in the past and it makes for an exciting and fun day, as you get to see things from more vantage points than the Average Joe with the excitement of the chase. You just have to be at the next vantage point on time.
I've "chased" the BBMF from Coningsby to Rutland Water, the Dutchess of Sutherland up the West Coast line from Crewe to Carlisle and the TDF across Yorkshire. The last one wasn't planned in advance and I only had a rough idea of the Tour's timings.
As I said, it's only an idea to consider.

I think I could be up for this one!!! We don't have to leave Yorkshire anyway
Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
Personnally I think we should stay in Yorkshire as per my original post and do the Tour de France 2 routes on a Sat and Sun in June 2015.
* Any volunteers up there to try them out and assess whether the routes would be OK for us? Routes are on the web.
* + Any volunteers in the hotel/leisure trade who could suss out a hotel deal for us? Fri, Sat, & poss Sun: dinner, b&b? Good parking etc...? Some would come for just 1 night I expect.
If guys want to go up to the Lakes, do the passes etc, perhaps tack onto either the Fri or Mon?? For me it's just Yorkshire this time...
Have we a proper plan tho?

I like the idea of following the route of the TDF. I've thought about picking a year in the past and doing the whole thing. Have you put the routes into TomTom to see how long they would take? I think it's only one day to drive what the bikes cover in two, but you need to check. To get an idea of scale, I managed to "cross the circle" from Knaresborough to Holmfirth on Day Two in about an hour when I was chasing the pelaton. Cracking back roads .Ci wrote:Personnally I think we should stay in Yorkshire as per my original post and do the Tour de France 2 routes on a Sat and Sun in June 2015.

Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
As Pingu says day 2 of the race takes just over a couple of hours, they actually changed the route, as it was supposed to go thro glossop and over the snake A57 to sheffield , even stage 1 dont take long,so if youre planning a 2 day trip you need to extend the route, I drive these roads as its my backyard.
I would suggest staying overnight around Hawes, but extend the route over the Buttertubs up to Alston and over to Hexham, great roads, before heading back south down to Barnard Castle, grinton, Aysgarth and finish around Harrogate/Wetherby for m'way access for the group to head home,

Hi guys. Is there someone out there who can suss out some routes? Sadly I am not Tom Tom literate, and perhaps people who live nearby could suss out 2 routes - for us who are unfamiliar with the area?

Re: Zedfest w/e in Yorkshire next year??
I don't mind taking a look around, finding hotels and local attractions, depending on interest. A friend recommends this route as Day 1, bits can be omitted, it's a suggestion.
This circular drive through the heart of the Yorkshire Dales packs an incredible scenic punch - and the driving isn't bad, either.
If you're approaching from the west, leave the M6 at junction 36 and follow the A65 past Kirkby Lonsdale to Ingleton and the start of the route. Early-starters are advised to stop for a bacon buttie at Devil's Bridge, just beyond Kirkby Lonsdale, a spot (and snack) beloved of motorcyclists.
In Ingleton, take the left turn on to the B6255 towards Hawes and as you climb away from the village you'll get a close look at Ingleborough on your right. If you're keen on speleology, the White Scar Caves are a must, because this is the longest show cave in England. The tour takes an hour and a half but if you find yourself flagging, just think of the bloke who discovered the system in the 1920s - because he had to explore the whole lot by the light of a candle cradled in a bowler hat.
It's always worth stopping at Ribblehead to admire the 24-arch viaduct, perhaps the most dramatic sight on the 72-mile Settle-Carlisle railway line. However, the metalled road is also impressive - our route continues on the fabulous B6255, running parallel to the Pennine Way for most of the 10 miles or so to Hawes.
Most visitors will probably want to spend some time at the Wensleydale Creamery on Gales Lane (a right turn just as you enter Hawes). You can watch the cheese being made - the creamery advises you arrive between 10.30am and 3pm for the best view - and there's also a restaurant and a coffee shop. The creamery's museum explains that the Cistercians were making cheese in the dale as early as 1150, but of course it was Wallace and Gromit who propelled Wensleydale to global fame. If you want to find out more about the fascinating history of the area, the Dales Countryside Museum, at the far end of town, offers a less cheesy view of things.
From Hawes, the drive continues eastwards through Wensleydale on the A684. This is Herriot country, and much of the filming for All Creatures Great And Small was done in and around Askrigg.
A stroll at Aysgarth Falls provides a glimpse of the best of this spectacular area. While you're at it, visit the lovely Church of St Andrew. As well as some wonderful wood carving and a beautiful rood screen, it has the largest churchyard in England.
If you've got time, take one more brief diversion, to the 600-year-old Bolton Castle, where Mary Queen of Scots was held for six months. Modern visitors will enjoy tarrying a while in the fine medieval garden.
Just beyond Aysgarth, the route turns south and picks up the B6160 for the sublime drive through Bishopdale and then through the magnificent valley of Wharfedale. There are plenty of excellent places to stop for a drink and to enjoy the view on this stretch. But keep an eye out for the right turn on to the B6265, another fine run that will take you past Cracoe to the A65 north of Skipton.
This is a handsome market town, a fabulous place for a stroll. However, the splendid castle is the real high point, because despite falling to the Cromwellian forces after a three-year siege, it is well preserved. Or rather it's well restored, because Lady Anne Clifford supervised the rebuilding following the Civil War. As a bonus, there are yet more excellent views across the town from the Chapel Terrace.
From Skipton, the route turns west on the A65 towards Kirkby Lonsdale and although this is an A-road it's far from dull - there are dales views on your right all the way back to Ingleton, while beyond Settle on your left you'll catch glimpses of the equally lovely (if largely tree-free) Forest of Bowland.
And if you've got time for one more detour, embark on a bracing stroll in the lovely village of Clapham.
Distance: 80 miles.
Traffic forecast: Generally quiet, though the A65 can be busy in peak season.
Landmarks: Ingleborough and the Ribblehead viaduct, Wensleydale, Aysgarth Falls, Bishopdale and Wharfedale.

My alteration from this would be at the end - once we leave skipton continue on the A59 into Clitheroe and then from there go up through the trough of bowland to Quernmore and then Near & Over Kellet, and Carnforth and then meet back up at Kirby Lonsdale that way.. Not sure it would add more miles but the trough is a fantastic windy road..
