M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi Everyone,
Currently my engine is broken, so from now I'd like to swap it by a M3 engine with an automatic gearbox (DKG).
But someone could give me an advice, how to fit that and which engine and automatic gearbox could fit on my Z1 ?
Which budget is it and who could help me to make that if I give my car for working on this project ?
Many Thanks
Bruno

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Which M3 engine?
I think your best option for an M3+Auto would be S54+SMG.

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi
Thank a lot for your answer, but I heard the SMG gearbox would be the worst choice !!
all of the SMG versions are completely obsolete (technologies) !!
During each shift, you have some chocs and it's not a reliable gearbox !!
Thx

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
I can't help but think you'll have a massive challenge changing the gearbox on a Z1. The car uses a torque tube which would need to be modified. The SMG boxes are bigger so the gearbox tunnel would need to be enlarged. I'm not saying it can't be done but if you're paying someone else it will likely be very expensive.
In my opinion the Z1 is a little low on power but to install an M3 engine is pointless in a car with such a soft flexible chassis. It's sweet riding/handling car as built by BMW but to try to change it into a dragster will ruin it. The chassis isn't stiff enough, the brakes are too small and the steering is too slow.

Hi Everyone,
Many Thanks for your answers !!
Yes for sure my conversion includes to fit on M3 brake system !!
But I think my main issue is to find the best powertrain (engine + automatic gearbox) and an expert to help me and non generating high cost as well...
I think the 6 cylinders is the best compromise (power/weight), few owners have fitted on some V8 or V10, but I don't know what's happened regarding weight distribution ??
And also please don't talk about SMG gearbox, that is the worst-ever gearbox !!
Now there is the newest DKG geabox with dual clutch transmission, that would be great to fit on my Z1...

DKG boxes are even bigger!!
Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi,
What's pity !!
So maybe, a classic automatic gearbox with torque converter ??
Please take a look at this video on YouTube (copy/paste this link below) :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ovuBuve ... A&index=41
When the person open the driver door, we can see a specific shifter for automatic gearbox !!
I've never seen that... and you (members) ??
Appollo & Senna are 2 members who were very active members regarding Z1 convervion (M3, V8, V10, V12)
So are they still available to help me ??
I sent them 2 emails via "zroadster.net" (I am waiting for their answers)
Many Thanks

How about using the N54/N55 3.0 litre engine and DCT gearbox from an E9x 3 series

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi,
What does it mean "N54/N55 3.0 litre engine and DCT(*) gearbox from an E9x 3 series" ??
I am not an expert yet !!
Your suggestion "engine and DCT gearbox" comes from which model ??
Please could you tell me more...
Maybe it's a good idea !!
(*) DCT = Dual Clutch Transmission
Many Thanks

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
My partner has a 2010 E93 3 series 335i with 7 speed DCT transmission, the engine is N54, later models use N55
Engine spec is 306bhp with 290 ft/ibs torque, can be tuned to 400 bhp

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi,
That seems to be quite good !!
Now the first question is, can we swap and fit on ??... in terms of space at first... (N54 + DCT)
That's a good question, isn't it ??...
And then, there will be the question about price !!

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Anything can be done. Whatever you do will require a lot of modifications to the body. The only thing that will remain standard is the outside of the car. There are no bolt-on options that meet your requirements. If you pay someone to do it, you will be lucky to get change from £20,000. If you do it yourself, it will take at least 500 hours, and you will need the space to do it.Bruno wrote:Hi,

I'm not saying don't do it. On the contrary, I want you to do it. I just don't want you to start something you can't finish.

Hi everyone,
A thing is true, I am not to do anything just by myself, I need of your help (members) !!
Many thanks for your answers.
But unfortunately, I think the members like "Senna" who have fitted on their own Z1 some M3, V8 or V12, they are not too active on the website !!
I sent some messages but any answer, but they have all of skills, knowledges and background.
So I keep asking them, but I think I should postpone my big project maybe...
PS :
I changed my cellphone a long time ago, so I lost the Senna's phone number !!
Bye Guys

Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
You might wish to contact http://www.kfz-schaffer.de - Franz knows the Z1 better than almost anyone. But I still think you're fou!
Re: M3 Conversion + DKG Gearbox
Hi everyone,
Thanks for your answer !!
