Clutch not quite right. (update, new clutch now fitted!)

Post by lightning »

I just taxed my 3.0 Z3 and driving it for the first time in a few months the take up on the clutch seems high. There's a fair bit of travel on the pedal before the biting point is reached.

However the clutch does not slip and the engine will stall if you try to pull away with the handbrake on.
Does this sound like the clutch is needing replacement? How high is the biting point on your 3.0 Z3?

As the car is for sale l'll need to know if it's OK. Otherwise it'll have to have a new clutch before sale, l don't want the new owner to be saddled with a clutch change after a few months.

I took it to my local BMW Specialist this afternoon and they said the clutch was not worn out (not heavy, biting point OK, no judder) but it was "dragging" slightly.

I am surprised that nobody commented or replied.

Anyway, new clutch is £350 fitted.
And that's from a BMW specialist. So l'll get it done, can't be a bad thing.

Clutch fitted today and much better, smoother take up and better gear shifting. Also the bite point is lower down so no need for the extended clutch stop rubber that l fitted last year.

They showed me the old clutch which they said was about 60% worn, so it was not worn out. They said the diaphragm springs can "become weak" causing the clutch to be less positive.

Anyway, it's much better now, although the bill was nearer £500 than the £350 they quoted.

Good news it's sorted. How many miles are there on this car?
I don't think £500 is to bad for a complete clutch fitted at a garage.
I also think not many folk commented due to the fact that the Z3s clutches last a long time.

56,000

The clutch was working but l was not happy with the action, and the bite point seemed high. They fitted a LUK clutch which is the same make as OE.

being an engineer.... the people actually fitting the clutches arent... so talk ummm rubbish, or old wives tales!
new things do make things better, but id bet the clutch was ok... the mechanism probably needed a little love

LUK is a good company, make a lot of things... as good if not better than OEM.
we did a quote .. they get a lot of warranties.. but 99,9% of them were because they were fitted wrongly.....
i have little trust for mechanics lol.
