CD Changer removal

Post by Grello »

Hi All

I want to remove the changer and I think I can live with the hump. I found a great article on here about going humpless but in that article the changer had already been removed. I've searched and searched but not found the right answer.

Is it simply a case of removing the two black plastic rivet things that face you on the hump and then poking about to get access to a bracket or is there more to it? I've yanked hard on the rivets and I think they will break off if I pull any harder and I don't want to do that if I'm heading in the wrong direction.

Thanks in advance. :)

From memory the black plastic things just secure the carpet trim to the mounting bracket. You need to remove the whole of that upper carpet, then you'll see the bolts that hold the mounting bracket to the top of the boot.

The black plastic rivets simply hold the carpet in place and pull out (sometimes with force) and then back in. behind the carpet is a cradle that holds the changer and, depending on the system, an amp. the cradle can be removed very easily. To remove the hump fully you need a different piece of carpet - they come up for sale sometimes but not often - andy AKA spursfaninacoupe might have one.

The carpet trim is still available new from BMW for £65.

As the CD changer was an option on all versions of the Z3, you can just order the "non CD changer" trim piece from your friendly BMW dealer's spares counter.

As already noted, if you fit a new rear trim piece and your Z3 has the electric roof motor in the boot, it leaves a small gap in the boot carpet on the left side.

I cut a square out of the carpet l took out, and fitted it behind the side trim piece to fill the gap, and it looks pretty much perfect.

So, thanks to articles and advice here, I'm now bump-free and waiting for the new top carpet to come in from Germany. Lightning - I'll do what you did and I'll fill the gap with a cut-off from the old bit.

Grateful to all for the help, thanks! :)

I now have a changer going begging for free if anyone wants it, collect or pay cost of delivery; no guarantees that it works although I know it ejects the cassette ok so a good chance it will. Let me know if interested.

Cruise control retrofit next :o - parts on the same order from Germany.

Not cheap: Interface £53.34 + VAT; switch £97.53 + VAT; knob (I guess it goes in the switch) £7.84 + VAT. So that's £158.71 + VAT.
