Wax oil/undersealing
Wax oil/undersealing
Hello All,
I'm thinking of setting some time aside this summer to remove the arch liners and a few panels and get the the underside cleaned and sealed up. Has anyone done this before? or is there a thread on this?
Cheers

It's a worthwhile exercise. In fact it's vital to stop your Z3 from rotting away.

2001 Z3 2.2 Topaz Blue (Trudy) - Keeper rebuilt from a write-off
2002 Z3 2.2 Titan Silver (Cookies) - Keeper rebuilt having been bought with a seized engine
2002 Z3 3.0 Sapphire Black (Peanut) - Keeper awaiting rebuilding having been bought as an abandoned project
Plus Willy, Kodak & Maycee - All 2.2 Sport projects. Yes, 6 is a lot of Z3s
Always happy to try and help with spares

Worthwhile in my opinion.
I took all the wheel arch liners off and was pleased to find no rust at all. It's important to treat inside the sills and these can be removed once the liners are off.

Good how to over on .org forum

Did this to mine earlier this year, very relieved to find no rust on mine, it was very clean. Good covering with clear and black Waxoyle, used a shultz gun on my compressor to apply it. You may have to thin the waxoyle down with white spirit to get it to spray ok. The white spirit evaporates out of it once applied and the waxoyle dries into its set state.
Here is my thread with pictures of mine.

Re: Wax oil/undersealing
had my zed up on the car lift earlier this year found some rust on the fuel tank straps cleaned them up then coated them with Kurust and any other rusty bits then sprayed with waxol but it was very thick due to it being cold so I put the waxol bottle into a bucket of very hot water till it turned like water , no problem spraying

Re: Wax oil/undersealing
Dilute the Waxoyl with 10% gearbox oil and it stops it from going hard/flaking off.
I tried it on my friend's static caravan chassis, six years later the coating is still sticky and mostly intact after being subject to six British Winters.

You'll get an advisory every MOT - but heylightning wrote:Dilute the Waxoyl with 10% gearbox oil and it stops it from going hard/flaking off.

I've done it to both my Land Rover Defenders and all l get at MOT time is "it's nice to see one well protected against rust"

Why is it an advisory?

Re: Wax oil/undersealing
Probably because the tester is unable to examine for corrosion in floor panels, sills, suspension components, brake pipes, etc because they are covered in underseal - I sprayed the underneath of mine prior to MOT - got one advisory "underneath covered in underseal".BladeRunner919 wrote:Why is it an advisory?
Wouldn't be too bothered if I was looking at a car and this was the only advisory on the sheet, in fact I would be pleased.

Re: Wax oil/undersealing
Oh I see. Yes, I think I recall people getting advisories on newer cars because there are so many plastic covers on things that the MOT testers can't actually see anything!
