Recently purchased a '97 Z3 2.8i and the electric roof is not working. Is this a common problem and what do I look for? Micro switches?

This is a relatively common problem. Have a look here:

Until you get it fixed, you can disengage the hydraulic motor in the boot compartment if necessary.
