Z11 (E1) Electric Car

The Z11 was the first pure-bred electric car, and under the name 'E1' was the star of the Frankfurt International Automobile Exhibition in 1991. The team's main aim was to create a car that was typical of BMW with regard to originality, performance and functionality, but overall it should operate exclusively on electricity.

Everyone who was able to drive it agreed on the unexpected performance and viability for daily use. Shortly thereafter, a somewhat larger American variation, the E2, based on the E1, was developed as part of a study. Some variations of this contained combustion motors.
