A possible cause was explained to me as the engine control unit 'waking up' and having a look at the systems periodically, even though the ignition may be off. Also alarms and immobilisers can require battery power whilst the car isn’t being used.
One solution is to fix a pair of fused leads direct from the battery terminals to point where they can be connected to a constant monitoring battery charger. In my car I have placed a fly lead in the boot with a polarised socket. On leaving the car in the garage, I connect this lead to the charger lead and shut the boot. The charger is then reset (most of the monitoring chargers will need a reset on reconnection) and I can leave the car knowing that the battery is going to be monitored and charged only if necessary. It is important to note that a normal battery charger which cuts out when the battery is charged will not continue to monitor the battery. The charger needs to be a constant monitoring type. Mine is marketed as ‘Accumate’ its' charge rate is very low and does not have the power to 'bring up' a flat battery. There are other makes. With this method an alarm can still be used, as the car’s electrical systems will remain ‘live’. Important note. If you do this, don’t forget to put a note in front of the steering wheel to alert you of the charger connection. BMWs look silly going down the road with a battery charger attached.
Another way of protecting the car battery is to fix high amperage battery connect cables to mount a racing style cut out switch in the boot. This would need to be inserted in the main positive battery lead. This will enable you to park the car & lock the doors; open the boot, operate and remove the switch top. Now lock the boot and your car is completely dead. Until you replace the switch top, the clock, alarm and any other systems will be inoperative. Note also that the aforementioned ECU may then behave in 'limp' mode until all the operating envelope has been driven. In other words the car may 'drive funny' at first.
