Posted by Allan Harrop on 26-Nov-2000 at 20:13: Removing the door skin on BMW Z1. (Example done on drivers side). The lower side panel has to be removed first. Remove all flat head bolts fixing panel to the under floor. Remove plastic cover in the wheel arch just at the point where the side panel joins (This will reveal a vertical bolt head undo.) The side panel now has no further fixings and will come off when slid to the rear of the car. Power the door down to about half way. Now from inside the car sitting in the drivers seat undo the 4 screws hidden under the There is a 5th screw at the rear of the trim just at your shoulder. This is almost impossible to get at but fortunately the trim has a slotted hole on this one and will allow you to pull the trim in towards the car off the slotted hole. This should allow the door top trim to be removed. Replace the fuse and power the door to the full up position. And power the window down to the lowest position. Again from inside the car just at your shoulder pull back the door trim side panel this will reveal a port hole that you can put a screwdriver through to undo the self tapper just near the door handle moulding. That is the only fixing at the top of the door skin. Now power the door down to its lowest position and remove the plastic pop rivet type With the door in the lowest position lift the door skin out and up to unhook the top edge of the door skin and it should lift clear. When refitting the skin again with the door in the lowest position place the top left hand corner on to the door frame first and hang the top edge. Replace all bolts. It is wise to practice this a couple of times so that when you get your door painted If you get stuck just e-mail me for further instuction. Allan.
